In 1975, a Soviet Venera probe was the first to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Venera#\/media\/File:Foto_de_Venera_9.png\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">return an image from the surface of another world<\/a>, but in Venus&#8217;s hellish atmosphere functioned for only a few seconds. Since then, there were more successful Soviet and American trips, the European Union&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Venus_Express\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Venus Express,<\/a> a peek by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Parker_Solar_Probe\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NASA&#8217;s Parker Solar Probe<\/a>, and several by Japan&#8217;s space agency. With the shutdown of its Akatsuki Venus Climate Orbiter, <a href=\"https:\/\/cosmos.isas.jaxa.jp\/our-last-presence-at-venus-has-gone-silent\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">humankind&#8217;s last presence on Earth&#8217;s sister world falls quiet.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For almost ten years, Akatsuki has been the only active spacecraft orbiting our inner neighbour,&#8221; writes JAXA&#8217;s Institute of Space and Astronautical Science. &#8220;The spacecraft&#8217;s mission was to investigate the climate of Venus, whose sparkling clouds bestowed the name of the goddess of beauty, but below which a dense carbon dioxide atmosphere smothers the surface to drive temperatures that could melt lead. \u2026 To date, <a href=\"https:\/\/akatsuki.isas.jaxa.jp\/en\/papers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">178 journal papers<\/a> have been published on the Akatsuki mission and using Akatsuki data, and there are more results still to come.
