A fresh wave of uncertainty has arrived for the British high street<\/a> as a series of store closures<\/a> are set to take place this month.<\/p>\n With online shopping only ever getting more popular, the demise of the high street has been ongoing for a while, especially since the global coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n Britain\u2019s high streets face an exodus of shops<\/a>. Long queues are now rare, while to let signs and boarded windows are becoming more commonplace as shoppers abandon in-person shopping.<\/p>\n The recent spate of closures includes WHSmith high street stores<\/a>, Wilko<\/a> and River Island<\/a>. Banks like NatWest, Santander, Halifax and Lloyds have axed hundreds of branches this year<\/a>.<\/p>\n Some research has even estimated that Britain lost up to 37 shops a day last year.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\tSign up for all of the latest stories\t\t\t<\/p>\n Start your day informed with Metro’s News Updates<\/a> newsletter or get Breaking News<\/a> alerts the moment it happens. <\/p>\n And more shops will be shutting soon after Morrisons<\/a>, Poundland<\/a>, Paddy Power and Ann\u2019s Cottage surf shops announced fresh closures.<\/p>\n Morrisons<\/p>\n \t\t Morrisons is due to close 103 sites<\/a>, including including stores, cafes, florists, and pharmacies. This is part of the supermarket\u2019s \u2018programme of renewal\u2019 this year.<\/p>\n After being part of British life for more than 125 years, the loss of the stores will be a big blow to customers.<\/p>\n Dozens of cafes, 17 daily convenience stores, 13 florists, four pharmacies, 18 market kitchens, 35 meat counters and 35 fish counters are expected to close in a bid to \u2018optimise operations\u2019 and boost growth, Morrisons said.<\/p>\n Morrisons\u2019 chief executive Rami Baiti\u00e9h said the closures were a \u2018necessary part of our plans to renew and reinvigorate Morrisons and enable us to focus our investment into the areas that customers really value and that can play a full part in our growth\u2019.<\/p>\n Poundland<\/p>\n \t\t Poundland <\/a>was sold earlier this year with a company-wide restructure causing many sites to shut before the end of 2025.<\/p>\n Closing down sales have already begun, with customers rushing to grab last-minute bargains.<\/p>\n A Poundland spokesperson said: \u2018Customers will be able to take advantage of significant savings as these stores prepare for closure in the days ahead.<\/p>\n Poundland\u2019s UK country manager, Darren MacDonald, added: \u2018The special reductions, on top of the value we provide in every store, will help us leave locations we\u2019re leaving with pride.\u2019<\/p>\n A total 27<\/p>\n Walsall (October 29)<\/p>\n Paddy Power <\/p>\n \t\t Paddy Power is set to close 57 of its retail outlets across the UK and Ireland after a review of its high street<\/a> estate.<\/p>\n The announcement of the closure of the gambling shops has caused concern over the future of other high street betting shops. <\/p>\n The Chancellor\u2019s budget will be announced on November 26, but is already rumoured to raise tax levels for UK operators.<\/p>\n Paddy Power said 247 staff are at risk of redundancy, with 128 of those in the UK and 119 in the Republic of Ireland.<\/p>\n Flutter UKI said affected staff would be \u2018offered redeployment opportunities where possible\u2019.<\/p>\n Ann\u2019s Cottage surf shop <\/p>\n \t\t Ann\u2019s Cottage, known for its surf and lifestyle clothing and accessories, is closing its flagship store. <\/p>\n The store in Falmouth, Cornwall<\/a>, is set to close on Sunday, November 9, just months after the brand shut its Wadebridge store. <\/p>\n Becci Cornelius, co-owner of Ann\u2019s Cottage, explained the decision to the Falmouth Packet<\/a>, saying: \u2018This choice does not reflect the performance of the store itself \u2014 which has been successful and well supported \u2014 but rather a considered decision in line with the new direction of the business.\u2019<\/p>\n She added that they are \u2018streamlining operations and investing in areas where we see the greatest opportunity for long-term growth\u2019.<\/p>\n There are now seven Ann\u2019s Cottage locations left across Cornwall. <\/p>\n A notice on the window of the store said: \u2018Thanks staff and customers for their support over the years.<\/p>\n \u2018After many wonderful years, we\u2019re sadly closing our\u00a0Falmouth\u00a0store.<\/p>\n \u2018We want to express our deepest gratitude to all our amazing customers for their loyalty and support over the years.<\/p>\n \u2018It\u2019s been a privilege to be part of this community, and we\u2019re especially thankful to our fabulous Falmouth team for all their dedication and hard work.\u2019<\/p>\n But it\u2019s not all doom and gloom for the high street as Gap is set to reopen. <\/p>\n Gap makes a comeback<\/p>\n Gap is set to return to the UK high street after closing all of its 81 stores in 2021<\/a>.<\/p>\n \t\t The fashion chain was incredibly popular during the 1980s and 1990s but decided to close its high street stores in a bid to become a digital-first brand. <\/p>\n Drapers has reported that the fashion brand will be opening three stores:<\/p>\n Covent Garden (November 3)<\/p>\n Westfield London<\/a> (December 4)<\/p>\n Wembley<\/a> Park (December 12)<\/p>\n It previously closed its British stores four years ago due to \u2018market dynamics\u2019, but could still be found within Next stores in the UK.<\/p>\n Gap joins other retail brands returning to the high street, such as Topshop opening within John Lewis stores next year.<\/p>\n This story was originally published
