Experts said the answer isn\u2019t clear-cut.<\/p>\n<p>  Is Molasses a Healthier Sweetener Than Honey?  <\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_7-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> The creator of the TikTok video on the benefits of molasses referenced its <a href=\"https:\/\/nutrivore.com\/?aff=9\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nutrivore Score<\/a>, which is a measurement of a given food\u2019s nutrient profile. Molasses has a Nutrivore Score of 367, while honey has a Nutrivore Score of 20.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_9-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> However, that doesn&#8217;t tell the full story.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_11-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cMolasses is not definitively \u2018better\u2019 than honey,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/zumpano-julia-4757482a\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Julia Zumpano, RD<\/a>, a dietitian at the Cleveland Clinic Center for Human Nutrition, told Verywell. \u201cIt depends on what you hope to obtain from its use. Each has different nutritional profiles and uses.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>  Why a Per-Calorie Comparison Isn&#8217;t Helpful  <\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_16-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> The creator of the video also talked about the nutrients molasses has per calorie, but this framing isn\u2019t very helpful when grocery shopping or deciding how to diversify your diet.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_18-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cTalking about foods the way we eat them\u2014say, by tablespoon\u2014is more helpful for the average person,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/ameliasherryrd\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Amelia Sherry, MPH, RD, CDCES<\/a>, clinical nutrition coordinator at Mount Sinai, told Verywell.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_20-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cTalking about it calorie-for-calorie is a way to over-sensationalize the number. It doesn\u2019t really help us when we\u2019re eating,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>  Molasses Has More Minerals  <\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_23-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Molasses is higher in minerals, while honey contains a wider nutrient variety, Zumpano said.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_25-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cTablespoon for tablespoon, molasses has about 41 times more calcium, 10 times more iron, twice as much manganese, and 27 times more biotin and potassium than honey,\u201d Sherry said.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_27-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cWhile those increases may sound impressive, when you put the numbers into perspective, you can see switching from honey to molasses may bump up your nutrient intake a bit, but it probably won\u2019t have a huge impact on your overall health.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_29-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> For example, Sherry explained, adding a tablespoon of molasses to your tea may help you get more calcium than if you used honey, \u201cbut it\u2019s still only providing about four percent of what an adult needs in a day.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_31-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Sherry said that in addition to the above, molasses is also higher in niacin, magnesium, choline, and pantothenic acid than honey.\n<\/p>\n<p>  Honey Has Less Sodium  <\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_36-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Honey contains far less sodium than molasses.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_38-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cTablespoon per tablespoon, molasses is 780%\u2014or nine times\u2014higher in sodium than honey, a mineral we want to avoid,\u201d Sherry said.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_40-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cThe difference here is even more insignificant since that seven milligrams per tablespoon is less than one percent of the recommended daily limit. Still, it shows that you can look at the numbers differently to make them seem like something they\u2019re not.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>  How to Choose Between Molasses and Honey as a Sweetener  <\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_43-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> You should choose whichever option you prefer unless you have specific dietary needs.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_45-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> &#8220;Someone adhering to a <a class=\"recommendation-inline-link-ai\" href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellhealth.com\/vegan-diet-7496061\" link-destination-recommendation-ai=\"true\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">vegan diet<\/a> may benefit from each calcium and iron boost they can incorporate into their diet, while the extra calcium and iron in molasses may be inconsequential for people who regularly eat dairy, poultry, or meat,&#8221; Sherry said.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_47-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> If you don\u2019t have specific dietary needs, your choice of molasses or honey will be based on your preferences.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_49-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> \u201cMolasses has a deeper, more complex, and slightly more bitter flavor than honey, which is lighter and sweeter than molasses,\u201d Zumpano said.<\/p>\n<p>Verywell Health uses only high-quality sources, including peer-reviewed studies, to support the facts within our articles.
