For Horner, those images mattered: Del Toro had the legs \u2014 and the calm \u2014 to defend pink. \u201cHe’s racing intelligently.\u201d<\/p>\n

Del Toro confirms the radio delay: \u201cThey should\u2019ve told me\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Del Toro\u2019s own reflections only underline Horner\u2019s analysis. As he explained in his interview with GCN:<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen the radio told me Yates was up the road \u2014 and that Van Aert was too \u2014 Simon already had 55 seconds. They should\u2019ve told me about Van Aert when he had ten seconds, and I\u2019d have said: let\u2019s attack, let\u2019s try,\u201d he recalled.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe strongest rider\u2026 never even tried to defend the jersey\u201d<\/p>\n

Horner\u2019s most scathing verdict was saved for the tactical breakdown itself: \u201cYou almost never see the strongest rider in the race of a grand tour lose because he never even tried to defend the jersey.\u201d<\/p>\n
