OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently said that the company is doing \u201cwell more\u201d than $13 billion in annual revenue \u2014 and he sounded a little testy when pressed on how it will pay for its massive spending commitments.<\/p>\n
His comments came up during a joint interview<\/a> on the Bg2 podcast between Altman and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella about the partnership between their companies. Host Brad Gerstner (who\u2019s also founder and CEO of Altimeter Capital) brought up reports that OPenAI is currently bringing in around $13 billion in revenue<\/a> \u2014 a sizable amount, but one that\u2019s dwarfed by more than $1 trillion in spending commitments for computing infrastructure that OpenAI has made for the next decade.<\/p>\n \u201cFirst of all, we\u2019re doing well more revenue than that. Second of all, Brad, if you want to sell your shares, I\u2019ll find you a buyer,\u201d Altman said, prompting laughs from Nadella. \u201cI just \u2014 enough. I think there are a lot of people who would love to buy OpenAI shares.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIncluding myself,\u201d Gerstner interjected.<\/p>\n Altman then added that there are critics who \u201ctalk with a lot of breathless concern about our compute stuff or whatever that would be thrilled to buy our shares.\u201d<\/p>\n In fact, he said that although there are \u201cnot many times\u201d when he wants OpenAI to be a public company, \u201cOne of the rare times it\u2019s appealing is when those people are writing these ridiculous \u2018OpenAI is about to go out of business\u2019 [posts], I would love to tell them they could just short the stock, and I would love to see them get burned on that.\u201d<\/p>\n Altman acknowledged that there are ways the company \u201cmight screw it up\u201d \u2014 for example by failing to get access to enough computing resources \u2014 but he said that \u201crevenue is growing steeply.\u201d<\/p>\n Techcrunch event<\/p>\n \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSan Francisco \u201cWe are taking a forward bet that it will continue to grow, and that not only will ChatGPT keep growing, but we will be able to become one of the important AI clouds, that our consumer device business will be a significant and important thing, that AI that can automate science will create huge value,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n Nadella also claimed that OpenAI has \u201cbeaten\u201d every business plan that it\u2019s given Microsoft as an investor.<\/p>\n Gerstner returned to the subject of OpenAI\u2019s revenues and IPO plans later in the interview, when he speculated about the company reaching $100 billion in revenue in 2028 or 2029.<\/p>\n \u201cHow about \u201827?\u201d Altman countered.<\/p>\n At the same time, he denied reports that OpenAI plans to go public next year.<\/p>\n \u201cNo no no, we don\u2019t have anything that specific,\u201d Altman said. \u201cI\u2019m a realist, I assume it will happen someday, but I don\u2019t know why people write these reports. We don\u2019t have a date in mind, we don\u2019t have a board decision to do this or anything like that.
