Liverpool are determined to sign a new centre-back in the January window as they aim to turn around what has become a turbulent season at Anfield.<\/p>\n
Arne Slot\u2019s side beat Aston Villa 2-0<\/a> last time out, earning a first Premier League win in four attempts, and a first clean sheet in 11 games across all competitions.<\/p>\n However, a significant reason for their recent decline in form is the lack of defensive stability, while they are majorly short of numbers and depth at the back.<\/p>\n Virgil van Dijk<\/a> and Ibrahima Konate<\/a> remain the first-choice duo, but a serious injury to Giovanni Leoni<\/a> has left Slot scrambling for covering options.<\/p>\n As a result, Football Insider\u00a0revealed\u00a0Liverpool want to sign a new centre-back in January<\/a>\u00a0and are assessing a number of options for the role.<\/p>\n Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told\u00a0Football Insider\u00a0last month that\u00a0Liverpool are keeping tabs on Dayot Upamecano<\/a>\u00a0and have been watching his performances.<\/p>\n As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider\u2019s Inside Track podcast<\/a>, Real Madrid, Chelsea and Man United are also keeping tabs on the defender\u2019s situation and are keen to land him on a free transfer should he become available.<\/p>\n MORE FOOTBALL INSIDER STORIES<\/p>\n The France international is out of contract at Bayern Munich at the end of the season, placing a number of Europe\u2019s elite clubs on alert with a move in mind.<\/p>\n Speaking on the Inside Track podcast, I explained: \u201cWell, I\u2019m sure they\u2019ll be hoping that maybe they could sign a player of the calibre of Upamecano on a potential free transfer in the summer. <\/p>\n \u201cYou\u2019ve got Liverpool looking at centre-backs, you\u2019ve also got Chelsea probably looking at centre-back in 2026. <\/p>\n \u201cManchester United have been long-term admirers of Upamecano before as well, and Real Madrid were also looking for centre-back reinforcements next year as well. <\/p>\n \u201cRight now it\u2019s probably an open race for signature as there\u2019ll be so many clubs ready to sign him on a free transfer. <\/p>\n \u201cIf a new deal can\u2019t be agreed but Bayern are doing everything they can to try and persuade the Frenchman to stay.\u201d<\/p>\n Not only have elite European clubs taken note of the defender\u2019s performances, but his former manager Thomas Tuchel once labelled him \u201cextraordinary\u201d for his displays.
