The $300 she receives each month in food assistance from the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program has been a needed lifeline to make sure she is able to maintain her blood sugar level.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-6e3c24\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cI need these benefits for my food. If I don\u2019t get the food, I won\u2019t be able to control my numbers,\u201d she told NBC News. \u201cIf you don\u2019t get it taken care of, you can lose toes or limbs, or could go blind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-ba9c25\" class=\"body-graf\">Now she is among the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/politics-news\/millions-americans-prepare-lose-snap-benefits-states-are-moving-bridge-rcna239159\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">more than 40 million people<\/a> who may not receive their November SNAP benefits as the government shutdown goes into its sixth week with no end in sight.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-b6eb5b\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cIt\u2019s scary,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-0879b1\" class=\"body-graf\">Trump&#8217;s attention, however, was elsewhere, this weekend. Just hours before these food assistance benefits were set to lapse, President Donald Trump hosted a lavish &#8220;Great Gatsby&#8221;-themed Halloween party at Mar-a-Lago, with the theme: &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/trump-hosted-great-gatsby-halloween-party-hours-snap\/story?id=127091016\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">A little party never killed nobody<\/a>.&#8221; And on Friday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/10\/31\/us\/politics\/trump-lincoln-bathroom-white-house.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">he posted dozens of photos<\/a> on social media about his fancy renovation of the Lincoln bathroom in the White House.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/2243878964-gcatk5.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-b4e130\" class=\"body-graf\">Along with the loss of SNAP benefits and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/congress\/government-shutdown-pain-air-traffic-control-snap-wic-benefits-tsa-rcna240244\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">disruption of other social service programs<\/a> for millions of people, the government shutdown has resulted in federal employees going without pay. Many of them have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/politics-news\/federal-workers-dc-food-bank-miss-first-full-paycheck-shutdown-rcna239698\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">turned to food banks<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/politics-news\/least-7000-federal-workers-filed-unemployment-benefits-shutdown-began-rcna238275\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">unemployment benefits<\/a> to get by.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-8d6be8\" class=\"body-graf\">Hannah\u2019s mom, Betty, a 63-year-old recent retiree who is a caretaker for her daughter and a longtime Trump supporter, said she is losing confidence in the president she once supported amid the shutdown fight.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-2a01b8\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cI think deep down he wants to help the country with things like food insecurity,\u201d she said. \u201cBut now he is busy out of the country and demolishing the White House. I know that is being paid for with private funds, but those could be used to help people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-44d26b\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cIt all seems very selfish,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-1af0f5\" class=\"body-graf\">Betty Szretter said she now regrets voting for Trump in 2024 and would prefer a Democrat in the White House to \u201cprotect benefits he [Trump] wants to cut.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-2c3266\" class=\"body-graf\">The shutdown is compounding problems that have intensified <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/donald-trump\/economic-anxiety-trump-democrats-rcna229872\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">broader anxiety over an economy<\/a> that in recent months has been marked by lingering high prices for many consumer goods, rough jobs numbers, mass layoffs at major companies \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/business\/business-news\/amazon-layoffs-thousands-corporate-artificial-intelligence-rcna240155\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">including Amazon<\/a> and Target \u2014 and an uptick in inflation.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-c3da84\" class=\"body-graf\">That stagnation has in recent months eroded the high approval marks President Donald Trump once enjoyed on the economy.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-87ca90\" class=\"body-graf\">The bleak picture has some Republicans sounding the alarm to the White House \u2014 even though delivering the news isn\u2019t easy.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-538947\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cNo one wants to tell the president he\u2019s losing on the economy,\u201d said a Republican strategist who said they recently warned the White House about their concerns.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-53a08c\" class=\"body-graf\">Trump\u2019s overall approval rating sits at 43%, while just 34% of registered voters say he has \u201clived up\u201d to expectations on the economy, 33% say he has \u201clooked out for the middle class\u201d and 30% say he met expectations on inflation, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/elections\/poll-frustration-trump-gives-democrats-opening-year-midterms-rcna240551\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a new NBC News poll released Sunday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1762091702227_mtp_clip_kornacki_251102_1920x1080-45ezb7.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-c6f2a7\" class=\"body-graf\">A White House official blamed Democrats for the prolonged shutdown and argued that some indicators, like growing wages and a booming stock market, are proof the economy has bright spots. The person also argued that the massive tax cuts and tariffs pursued by Trump are going to take time to fully take effect.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-49333a\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cI don\u2019t think anyone is under any illusions that things are perfect \u2026 but looking at the data, we feel good about the trajectory here,\u201d said the White House official, who, like others in this article, was granted anonymity to speak candidly.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-990601\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cThe bottom line is that the actual buying power and actual purchasing power of American consumers is going up, and, as far as specific prices go, you know there are things like gas and eggs that have gone down,\u201d the official said. They also asserted that Trump\u2019s pursuit of investment in the U.S. will pay major dividends in the future for American workers and consumers.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-8a6f76\" class=\"body-graf\">Sen. Bernie Moreno, an Ohio Republican and Trump ally, said in an interview with NBC News that he remains optimistic about the economy.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-f405e2\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cThe state of the economy is very strong, if you look at real wages that continue to go up,\u201d Moreno said. \u201cThe Working Families Tax Cut Act worked really well. &#8230; The big thing is, obviously, the Democrats don\u2019t want the economy to be successful, which is decently sad considering they should be cheering for the American people. But they shut down the government because they want Trump to fail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-daba06\" class=\"body-graf\">Republicans are pushing for the passage of a \u201ccontinuing resolution,\u201d which would extend current funding levels until Nov. 21. Democrats, meanwhile, want to include an extension of tax credits that help people buy private insurance through the Affordable Care Act. Those credits expire at the end of the year, and without the extension, millions of people who receive them are likely to see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-care\/obamacare-aca-premiums-climb-uninsured-rcna238048\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">steep premium increases<\/a>. Republicans have argued the health care fight should be handled separately, after the government reopens.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-b70fbc\" class=\"body-graf\">For his part, Trump for weeks has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/donald-trump\/democrats-call-disengaged-trump-get-involved-end-shutdown-rcna238873\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">largely been focused on issues<\/a> aside from the shutdown and economic concerns, with the exception of deals around his tariffs. Democrats have called on him to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/donald-trump\/democrats-call-disengaged-trump-get-involved-end-shutdown-rcna238873\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">become more engaged<\/a> to help end the stalemate.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-0fabaa\" class=\"body-graf\">On Tuesday night, Trump did write on social media that Senate Republicans should use the \u201cnuclear option\u201d to get rid of the filibuster. The drastic move would allow Republicans to reopen the government without needing 60 votes \u2014 and the cooperation of Democrats \u2014 but it was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/congress\/trumps-push-nuke-senate-filibuster-hits-immediate-republican-resistanc-rcna241119\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">swiftly rejected by Republican leaders<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-efb1cc\" class=\"body-graf\">Last week, Trump\u2019s attention was in Asia, far from the pain of the shutdown, with a big <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/world\/asia\/us-china-hope-make-progress-tariffs-trump-xi-meet-south-korea-rcna240445\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">announcement on tariffs<\/a>. Before that, much of his focus was on demolishing the East Wing of the White House to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/white-house\/list-donors-trump-new-white-house-ballroom-east-wing-rcna239481\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">build a $300 million ballroom<\/a> funded by private donors, a project that is ongoing.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-db326a\" class=\"body-graf\">And on Thursday, a reporter asked Vice President JD Vance about the loss of SNAP benefits, and whether the administration was working to find a funding solution, as it has tried to do to pay troops and law enforcement during the shutdown.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-917e15\" class=\"body-graf\">Vance avoided answering whether there would be a push around SNAP, instead blaming Democrats.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-7feee3\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cThe unfortunate reality \u2014 and we\u2019re starting to see this with our aviation industry \u2014 we\u2019re going to find out the hard way with SNAP benefits, the American people are already suffering, and the suffering is going to get a lot worse,\u201d Vance said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-0fc3e9\" class=\"body-graf\">Some relief could be coming \u2014 but if it does, it\u2019s over the Trump administration\u2019s objections. On Friday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/trump-administration\/federal-judge-orders-trump-administration-pay-snap-benefits-contingenc-rcna241187\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a federal judge ordered<\/a> the administration to distribute money to SNAP recipients \u201cas soon as possible\u201d by tapping a contingency fund. Another federal judge in a separate case also said it was unlawful for the administration not to pay out the benefits.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-6e5ebc\" class=\"body-graf\">The White House has argued that it cannot use those funds and is seeking further clarification from the courts.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1761943093369_now_mtp_full_hassett_251031_1920x1080-evwxgi.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-aeb7c3\" class=\"body-graf\">Several recent public polls have pointed to Trump having an economic problem, one that is quickly turning into a political one for Republicans trying to maintain slim majorities in the House and Senate headed into the 2026 midterms \u2014 an election where Republicans will have to energize Trump voters without his presence on the ballot.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-8a801f\" class=\"body-graf\">The new NBC News poll found Republicans have just a 1-point advantage over Democrats on \u201cdealing with the economy,\u201d a margin that has consistently been 15-20 points in favor of Republicans going back to 2018.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-156e70\" class=\"body-graf\">Chuck Rocha, a Democratic strategist who advised freshman Sen. Ruben Gallego\u2019s winning campaign in Arizona last year, said that economic hardship gives his party\u2019s candidates an opening to win key segments of the electorate \u2014 including the young men who helped Trump take back the White House \u2014 if they focus on making the argument that their policies are better than the president\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-da83a7\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cRight now, people\u2019s prices are going up. Their prices are going up for the utility bills, going up for lots of things in their life, because of the tariffs,\u201d Rocha said. \u201cIf you show up and start talking to folks about actually trying to provide for their family, there\u2019s going to be a lot of men who right now feel a little regret because they were promised lower prices and they\u2019re not getting them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-34c0eb\" class=\"body-graf\">Moreno said he was not worried \u201cabout the politics\u201d of the shutdown, noting that he has pledged to serve no more than two Senate terms and, as a native of Colombia, is constitutionally ineligible to be president. But he said Republicans need to better articulate their message: that they hold Democrats responsible for the shutdown and its economic ramifications.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-b7cc9c\" class=\"body-graf\">He specifically alluded to recent remarks from House Minority Whip Katherine Clark, D-Mass., who in an interview with Fox News acknowledged that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/reporters-notebook-white-house-pounces-after-top-dem-says-government-shutdown-gives-party-leverage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">families would \u201csuffer\u201d<\/a> because of the shutdown but emphasized that Democrats needed to exert their political \u201cleverage\u201d to address health care costs.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-07a14e\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cWe\u2019ve got to speak up more loudly and more aggressively, like [Senate Majority Leader] John Thune <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2025\/10\/30\/thune-government-shutdown-snap-military\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">did the other day<\/a>. I think we haven\u2019t shown enough outrage. We do it privately, but we haven\u2019t done it enough publicly. Just call these guys out. It\u2019s disgusting,\u201d Moreno said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-3d638d\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cWe need to speak clearly, with humanity, not political talk,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-c4637d\" class=\"body-graf\">Trump remains popular with Republicans on things like immigration enforcement \u2014 Betty Szretter says she still supports the president on that issue \u2014 but pocketbook issues more often than not have an outsize role in swaying election outcomes.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-cde172\" class=\"body-graf\">The NBC News poll found 83% of registered voters said the \u201ccost of living\u201d was their single most important issue or very important to them, a number that was at 58% when they were asked about \u201cimmigration and border security.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-847c7a\" class=\"body-graf\">On the Asia trip last week, Trump nevertheless told reporters he had the \u201chighest [poll] numbers I ever had.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-76da01\" class=\"body-graf\">He has also directly avoided questions about the economy.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-bbd809\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cLet\u2019s just make it about this subject,\u201d Trump said at an event centered around an autism announcement last month. \u201cI\u2019d rather not talk about some nonsense on the economy. I will say this: The economy is unbelievable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-b4465a\" class=\"body-graf\">Republicans running in swing House seats across the country, however, have not been eager to talk about Trump\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-abb046\" class=\"body-graf\">NBC News reached out to eight Republicans either defending swing seats they currently hold or challenging Democrats in winnable seats; seven did not return requests seeking comment. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1761942575564_now_mtp_clip_ablk_251031_1920x1080-qqnlqf.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-a4d261\" class=\"body-graf\">Brinker Harding is a Republican city councilman in Omaha running to replace Rep. Don Bacon, R-Neb., who is not seeking re-election in one of the most up-for-grab seats in the country. Harding said he believes that once the midterm campaigns really begin, moves Trump has made will have the economy in a better place.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-317fcb\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cCome next November, Republicans\u2019 tax cuts for working families and small businesses, in addition to projected interest rate cuts, will have the American economy moving more than it already is,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-7908d0\" class=\"body-graf\">Other swing state Republicans where vulnerable Democrats are on the ballot are pinning economic woes on those Democrats.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-480634\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cMaine\u2019s issues are especially pronounced on the economic front,\u201d said Lauren LePage, who is the Republican national committeewoman from Maine. \u201cAnd the blame for our high cost of living, nation-leading electricity price increases and more lies at the feet of Democrats here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-9fca05\" class=\"body-graf\">Maine is home to one of the nation\u2019s most closely watched 2026 Senate contests as Democrats try to knock off Republican Sen. Susan Collins. LePage\u2019s father, former Republican Gov. Paul LePage, is himself running to challenge Rep. Jared Golden, D-Maine, in a House seat that is considered winnable for either party.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-4aac32\" class=\"body-graf\">Other Republicans, including some former Trump allies, are acknowledging that prices have remained stubbornly high during Trump\u2019s second term in office.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-fdcd0d\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cPrices have not come down at all,\u201d Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., said on \u201cThe Tim Dillon Show\u201d last week. \u201cThe job market is extremely difficult. Wages have not gone up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-b7dbab\" class=\"body-graf\">She has also made an uncharacteristic pivot in recent weeks. After being one of Trump\u2019s staunchest defenders, she has been critical <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/congress\/heated-call-rep-marjorie-taylor-greene-chastises-republicans-shutdown-rcna240305\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">of the president and her own party<\/a> of late, agreeing with Democrats that the Affordable Care Act tax credits should be included as part of any deal to reopen the government.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-f22ca4\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cWhen it comes to the point where families are spending anywhere from $1,500 to $2,000 a month and looking at hikes coming on their insurance premiums, I think that\u2019s unforgivable,\u201d she told NBC News in early October.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-a81479\" class=\"body-graf\">For people like Betty Szretter, they just want the fight to be over and the focus to return to Americans hurting in the current economic climate.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-8a76bb\" class=\"endmark body-graf\">\u201cI would say practice what you preach and save the country as a true servant,\u201d she said when asked what she would say to Trump directly. \u201cThere are not a lot of people who use their wealth to actually help others.
