{"id":241817,"date":"2025-11-03T18:32:11","date_gmt":"2025-11-03T18:32:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/241817\/"},"modified":"2025-11-03T18:32:11","modified_gmt":"2025-11-03T18:32:11","slug":"ludicrous-non-story-daily-mail-claims-drivers-cyclists-and-even-joggers-risk-being-ticketed-by-10mph-speed-limit-but-ignore-fact-local-restriction-only-tempora","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/241817\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cLudicrous non-story\u201d: Daily Mail claims drivers, cyclists and even joggers \u201crisk being ticketed\u201d by 10mph speed limit&#8230; but ignore fact local restriction only temporary during roadworks (and speed limits don&#8217;t apply to runners or cyclists)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Daily Mail has published a story claiming that drivers, cyclists and even joggers could \u201crisk being ticketed\u201d under a \u201ccompletely wrong\u201d Labour council speed limit, brushing over the fact that the restriction is a temporary restriction during roadworks until the end.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In yet<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-15245379\/Life-10mph-Britain-Drivers-cyclists-JOGGERS-risk-ticketed-Labour-councils-completely-wrong-low-speed-limit-zone.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u00a0another piece on \u201cLondon\u2019s war on drivers&#8217; wages\u201d<\/a>, the tabloid\u00a0claims the 10mph speed limit is further \u201cproof vehicle owners are being driven off the streets\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When checking the speed of the cars driving past with a speed gun, they note that a cyclist was recorded reaching speeds of 18mph, and a runner reaching 12mph, despite speed limits not applying to runners or cyclists.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, it is later revealed that the speed limit, which is on St John\u2019s Street, North London, is due to the temporary narrowing of the carriageway due to roadworks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/road.cc\/content\/feature\/20-hysterical-daily-mail-anti-cycling-headlines-305993\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&gt;\u00a020 of the most hysterical Daily Mail anti-cycling headlines<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIslington Council have sensibly applied a temporary speed limit along a very short stretch of roadworks to ensure people\u2019s safety,\u201d said Simon Munk from London Cycling Campaign.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe only part of this ludicrous non-story that has validity is the comment that the 10mph limit is \u2018half-hearted\u2019 \u2013 the more sensible option would likely have been to make this section walk, wheel and cycle only, possibly permanently.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The plans for St John&#8217;s Street include a southbound cycle lane, rain gardens and cycle parking spaces.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" typeof=\"foaf:Image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/st-johns-street-plans.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"lazyload\" itemprop=\"image\" width=\"970\" height=\"1339\" alt=\"St John's Street Plans\" title=\"St John's Street Plans\"\/>St John&#8217;s Street Plans (credit: Islington Council)<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ryan, 24, told the Daily Mail: \u201cIt feels like they&#8217;ve half-pedestrianised the road. They should either fully pedestrianise it and not have cars coming down or not.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou see people outside pubs standing in the street, on a Friday night there are loads of people standing in the street. You can&#8217;t actually walk down the pavement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut half-hearting, going, oh we should pedestrianise things, the 10mph limit just feels like a halfway house and it&#8217;s not helping anyone.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/road.cc\/content\/news\/regulator-upholds-complaint-against-daily-mail-282417\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">&gt;\u00a0Complaint against Daily Mail upheld over false claim that campaigners wanted \u201cabuse of cyclists to be made a hate crime\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Daily Mail claims that the concerns are that the speed limit will continue indefinitely, due to the fact that the council painted it onto the road surface.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, the council have said that the limit will only apply while the roadworks is in place. As the Daily Mail mentions, it is not unusual for speed limits of 10mph to be in place during road works.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" typeof=\"foaf:Image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/st-john-street.png\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"lazyload\" itemprop=\"image\" width=\"970\" height=\"716\" alt=\"St John Street \" title=\"St John Street \"\/>St John Street  (credit: Islington Council)<\/p>\n<p>Cab driver Noor Yaghob, 45, also told the Daily Mail: &#8220;If the reason is because of the roadworks it&#8217;s fine. If it&#8217;s not, if it carries on after I think it&#8217;s completely wrong.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Recently because there&#8217;s a lot of work going on here and there are a lot of people moving about. It used to be a wider road and now because of the works it&#8217;s so narrow. I think it&#8217;s justified under the circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m a minicab driver. So when I look at it I want to [drive] faster, but you have to follow the speed limit.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/road.cc\/content\/news\/cycling-live-blog-6-august-2025-315309\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">&gt;\u00a0\u201cPity she didn\u2019t drown\u201d: Daily Mail readers have meltdown after \u201centitled\u201d cyclist pushed into canal by angry dog walker in viral clip \u2013 as drivers claim \u201cshe could have killed that dog\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Councillor Rowena Champion, Islington Council&#8217;s Executive Member for Environment, Air Quality and Transport, said: &#8216;The works at St John Street require temporary narrowing of the carriageway.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;During this time, in order to keep local people and road users safe, we have put in place a temporary 10mph speed restriction.
