{"id":241821,"date":"2025-11-03T18:35:09","date_gmt":"2025-11-03T18:35:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/241821\/"},"modified":"2025-11-03T18:35:09","modified_gmt":"2025-11-03T18:35:09","slug":"ireland-cricket-heinrich-malan-very-much-in-favour-of-two-tier-test-championship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/241821\/","title":{"rendered":"Ireland Cricket: Heinrich Malan &#8216;very much in favour&#8217; of two-tier Test championship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Ireland head coach Heinrich Malan believes an expanded World Test Championship would enable his side to play more regular red-ball cricket.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Ireland were granted Test status in 2017 and have since played 10 matches, winning three and losing seven.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Their two-Test series in Bangladesh this month will be their first matches in the format since they beat Zimbabwe in February.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">There have been suggestions that, after the current Future Tours Programme ends in 2027, Ireland, along with \u00adAfghanistan and Zimbabwe, could be included in the World Test Championship for the first time and join Pakistan, West Indies and Bangladesh in a newly created second tier.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Such a structure, which would include promotion and relegation between the two divisions, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/cricket\/articles\/cql5q4rg326o\" class=\"ssrcss-k8mrr8-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">has proven controversial<\/a> but Malan sees the plans as a potential solution for Ireland&#8217;s lack of matches.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;I don&#8217;t see too many problems with that.
