The Southern Taurid meteor shower peaks overnight on Nov. 4-5, when a flurry of bright meteors could potentially be seen streaking through Earth&#8217;s sky as our planet passes through the outer edge of a debris swarm shed by the wandering comet 2P\/Encke.<\/p>\n<p><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/meteor-showers-shooting-stars.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/meteor-showers-shooting-stars.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Shooting stars<\/a> are seen when shards of ancient comets collide with <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17683-earth-atmosphere.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17683-earth-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth&#8217;s atmosphere<\/a> at tens of thousands of miles per hour, which swiftly burn up in a magnificent display as they&#8217;re overwhelmed by the friction created by collisions with air molecules in the atmosphere. The Southern <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/taurid-meteor-shower\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/taurid-meteor-shower\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Taurids<\/a> are known for producing spectacular fireballs, as particularly large pieces of interplanetary debris can slam into our planet that can produce meteors that can momentarily turn night to day as they flare to life in the night sky.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" href=\"\" data-url=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"7e065a9c-e90f-4f78-bb7e-51d1358d926c-2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">2025 happens to be a &#8220;swarm year&#8221; for the Southern Taurids, which could see the shower put on a particularly impressive show during the Nov. 4-5 peak, when up to 10 bright meteors may be visible each hour, sharing the skies with a near-full moon. However, the light from the moon may mean that only the brightest meteors will be visible.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"f77e2554-7da4-4a30-8c63-9c6f14a27ddf\">Swarm years are thought to occur as <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth<\/a> passes through a region of Encke&#8217;s debris trail containing a mass of particularly large commentary fragments. &#8220;We encounter these larger meteors about twice a decade at irregular intervals,&#8221; American Meteor Society expert <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amsmeteors.org\/about\/observer-profiles\/robert-lunsford-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.amsmeteors.org\/about\/observer-profiles\/robert-lunsford-2\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Robert Lunsford<\/a> told Space.com in an email. &#8220;Normal Taurid particles are usually the size of pea gravel with a few larger particles mixed in. (Image credit: Future)<\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"4fde0bdc-6915-4a6e-8e99-0a6c41eba4fe\">Try to allow 30 minutes for your eyes to fully adjust to the dark &#8211; while attempting to avoid staring directly at <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the moon<\/a> &#8211; and pick out a patch of sky 40 degrees above the constellation Taurus, where the meteor trails will be the longest. Remember, the width of your clenched fist held at arm&#8217;s length accounts for roughly 10 degrees in the night sky.<\/p>\n<p>Lunsford notes that Earth is passing through the outer edge of the swarm during the 2025 Southern Taurid peak, which will likely provide a less spectacular show compared to the previous swarm event in 2022. &#8220;So far though, fireball activity in October has been higher than normal, indicating that we may have underestimated the strength of this year&#8217;s display,&#8221; continued Lunsford. &#8220;Too bad a full moon occurs during the prime portion of this display. &#8220;<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<p>The next Southern Taurid swarm isn&#8217;t due to occur until 2032, so be sure to look up on Nov. 4-5 for a chance to catch a spectacular natural light show.
