{"id":245332,"date":"2025-11-05T13:05:12","date_gmt":"2025-11-05T13:05:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/245332\/"},"modified":"2025-11-05T13:05:12","modified_gmt":"2025-11-05T13:05:12","slug":"mystery-after-peregrine-falcon-chicks-living-in-cathedral-found-poisoned-news-uk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/245332\/","title":{"rendered":"Mystery after peregrine falcon chicks living in cathedral found poisoned | News UK"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t<img fetchpriority=\"high\" width=\"646\" height=\"415\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/SEI_272908659-3dd4.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-24614645\" alt=\"Peregrine falcon chicks after they had hatched on top of Worcester Cathedral.\" decoding=\"sync\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tViewers followed the chicks\u2019 lives up in Worcester Cathedral until they suddenly died (Picture: Worcester Cathedral)<\/p>\n<p>Bird lovers have been left shocked after a post-mortem exam showed that a cathedral\u2019s peregrine falcon chicks had died by ingesting poison.<\/p>\n<p>The chicks started their journey high up on the Worcester Cathedral, far away from most human and animal threats on the ground.<\/p>\n<p>Three chicks hatched in the nest earlier this year and the cathedral launched a live stream to show their lives to the rest of the world.<\/p>\n<p>Their parents, a falcon couple named Peter and Peggy, tended to the chicks in the nesting box they have used since 2022.<\/p>\n<p>But suddenly in May, the three chicks died. <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tSign up for all of the latest stories\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Start your day informed with Metro&#8217;s <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/newsletters\/news-updates\/?signup-source=news-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">News Updates<\/a> newsletter or get <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/newsletters\/breaking-news?ito=news-article&amp;?signup_source=news-article-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Breaking News<\/a> alerts the moment it happens. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Now a post-mortem examination of two of the three dead chicks has revealed that the cause of their untimely deaths was poison.<\/p>\n<p>Worcester Cathedral said: \u2018Two of the carcasses were recovered by the Peregrine Falcons in Worcester team and sent to a lab for analysis.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>This analysis would then be shared with the wildlife unit at West Mercia Police and the British Trust for Ornithology.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It is unknown how the chicks came to ingest a poison, and it is terribly sad that this happened this year, after three hugely successful years previously, where four chicks hatched each time and fledged successfully,\u2019 the cathedral\u2019s statement added.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"212\" height=\"227\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/SEI_272908591-4e9c.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-24614641\" alt=\"Peregrine falcon chicks in at Worcester Cathedral.\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tThe three little chicks hatched on top of Worcester Cathedral earlier this year (Picture: Worcester Cathedral)<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Previous years\u2019 juveniles have been sighted as far away as Bolton and <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/london\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">London<\/a>, which is wonderful, and we hope for more success in the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The established pair of adults, affectionately known as Peter and Peggy, or Mr and Mrs P, have been sighted regularly around the Cathedral and City since May, and both appear to be in good <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/health-news\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">health<\/a>. They have proven themselves to be excellent parents, so there\u2019s no reason not to look forward to a more positive outcome next year.\u2019 <\/p>\n<p>Since the chicks\u2019 cause of death was revealed, many have reacted to the sad news on <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/social-media\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">social media<\/a> and wished Mr and Mrs P better luck next year.<\/p>\n<p>One person said: \u2018Incredibly sad. Very sad.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The cathedral tower has become a popular spot for the falcons\u2019 home, but in the past it had seemed like they might not return.<\/p>\n<p>After over a ten-year gap, a peregrine falcon couple \u2013 the chicks\u2019 parents \u2013 moved into the cathedral in 2022 and successfully produced and fledged four young falcons.<\/p>\n<p>The pair returned the following year and in 2024 to raise four chicks each season, the cathedral said. <\/p>\n<p>A 24\/7 high-resolution camera capturing video and audio was installed in 2023 so bird fans could follow closely what happens in the nest.<\/p>\n<p>Footage before the death of the latest brood of chicks showed them hatching and feeding on various small animals from their parents.<\/p>\n<p>Peregrine falcons are no longer considered endangered, but the species came under threat from the widely used pesticide DDT before it was banned.
