{"id":245375,"date":"2025-11-05T13:39:10","date_gmt":"2025-11-05T13:39:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/245375\/"},"modified":"2025-11-05T13:39:10","modified_gmt":"2025-11-05T13:39:10","slug":"its-been-a-hard-year-to-get-a-contract-with-so-many-teams-uncertain-about-their-future-british-sprinter-retires-with-no-regrets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/245375\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;It&#8217;s been a hard year to get a contract with so many teams uncertain about their future&#8217; \u2013 British sprinter retires with &#8216;no regrets&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"f4d504da-8a47-463c-9e7b-a75a1c35b243\">British sprinter Dan McLay has hung up his racing wheels after a largely understated but impressive 11-year career which saw him win 10 professional races and ride four editions of the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/tour-de-france\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/tour-de-france\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tour de France<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The 33-year-old rode for <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/tag\/visma-lease-a-bike\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/tag\/visma-lease-a-bike\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Visma-Lease a Bike<\/a> this past year, but spent most of his career riding for the various guises of the French team now called Ark\u00e9a-B&amp;B Hotels.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"f4d504da-8a47-463c-9e7b-a75a1c35b243-2\">Deployed in the Ark\u00e9a leadout trains of Nacer Bouhanni and Arnaud D\u00e9mare, and latterly for Olav Kooij and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/this-season-has-been-pretty-incredible-british-breakthrough-star-matthew-brennan-wins-tour-of-britain-stage-3\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/racing\/this-season-has-been-pretty-incredible-british-breakthrough-star-matthew-brennan-wins-tour-of-britain-stage-3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Matthew Brennan<\/a> at Visma, McLay also had his own regular chances. His standout victory was the 2016 GP de Denain, when he somehow appeared from deep to snake through a crowded field to win.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p>Reflecting on his decision to retire, McLay told Cycling Weekly: \u201cI\u2019ve gone into every season in the last couple of years with the mindset of seeing how it goes, and if it goes well I\u2019d carry on.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t feel like I ever had great legs this season, and the final straw was when I broke my collarbone at the Renewi Tour [in August]. It\u2019s already been a hard year to get a contract with so many teams uncertain about their future, so I made the decision to call it a day. Since then I\u2019ve had no regrets and am looking forward to the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Ever modest, humble and never one to be in the spotlight, McLay downplayed his career victory count of 10, but his success makes him one of the winningest British riders of his generation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing a sprinter, the wins come a bit more than being another type of rider, but it\u2019s true that not too many guys even win a handful of races as a pro,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">The latest race content, interviews, features, reviews and expert buying guides, direct to your inbox!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think I\u2019m like most cyclists in that it was a dream to be pro, and then when I got a sniff of it I started thinking I could do this or that, and hoped that I could win some races.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI definitely dreamt of doing more than what I ended up doing, but that\u2019s sport \u2013 if someone is more talented than you, they\u2019ll win more; you\u2019ve got to make the most of what you\u2019ve got.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But I\u2019m more than happy with what I did, especially because the wins got harder and harder to come by.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:66.67%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Li9XaNjwwsfMPNb73MLaHX.jpg\" alt=\"Dan McLay riding for Arkea-B&amp;amp;B Hotels\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Li9XaNjwwsfMPNb73MLaHX.jpg\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Li9XaNjwwsfMPNb73MLaHX.jpg\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p>McLay spent eight seasons with Ark\u00e9a and its predecessors. <\/p>\n<p>(Image credit: Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p id=\"fc86ae0c-1173-46ac-ac19-1e7f022c2e7b\">His win at GP de Denain is often brought up in conversation. \u201cI remember being out of position and doing a big kick to get through some gaps and then a few doors opened for me,\u201d he remembered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt no point did it ever feel anything crazy. It was only when I saw the video did I see how it looked and it ended up being this iconic sprint.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After combining track and road in his earlier years \u2013 he was a junior world champion in the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/olympics-track-cycling-madison\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/olympics-track-cycling-madison\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Madison<\/a> in 2010 with Simon Yates \u2013 McLay rode for various U23 teams in Belgium before Bretagne-S\u00e9che Environnement finally gave him the chance to turn pro aged 23.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I joined Lotto\u2019s development team [in 2011] it was a choice between going there or joining British Cycling\u2019s academy. I chose Belgium because I thought it would be the quicker route to turning pro, but in the end it took me the full four years,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArk\u00e9a is the team I spent most of my career at and it became my home. It was a small team at first but I got plenty of opportunities to learn at a lower level without being thrown into massive races.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McLay also donned the pink jersey of EF Education First in 2018 and 2019, and ending his career with Visma means he bows out on a high. \u201cIt would have been nice to finish at home with Ark\u00e9a, but at the same time I got to play for Barcelona for a year and you can\u2019t ever turn that down.
