Its distinctive<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/lifestyle\/food-drink\/tried-sourdough-aldi-asda-sainsburys-35857497\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> salty taste and irresistible crunch<\/a> when toasted have won over many.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">However, the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/british-heart-foundation\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"British Heart FoundationLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">British Heart Foundation<\/a> (BHF) has suggested that there&#8217;s another type of bread we should be reaching for on a daily basis. They&#8217;ve also debunked some common misconceptions about sourdough&#8217;s impact on gut health.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">Victoria Taylor, a nutritionist advising for the BHF, explained that while sourdough can be a good option for some, it&#8217;s actually wholegrain bread that should be our go-to loaf.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">She noted: &#8220;Sourdough&#8217;s fermentation process does mean sourdough can have a lower glycaemic index than its standard bread equivalent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">&#8220;This means it causes blood sugar levels to rise more slowly, and so could be a better choice for people with diabetes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">However, given that sourdough is primarily made with white flour, the BHF recommends opting for wholegrain instead due to its higher fibre content, reports <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/life-style\/food\/2130001\/heart-experts-say-there-bread\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the Express<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/0_Whole-wheat-bread-loaf-with-oat-topping-healthy-whole-grain-bakery-food-rich-in-fiber-and-nutritio.webp\" alt=\"Whole wheat bread loaf with oat topping - healthy whole grain bakery food rich in fiber and nutrition, natural breakfast concept.\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Wholegain breads are considered a good choice because of their fibre content(Image: Getty)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">Victoria advised: &#8220;Wholegrain bread is higher in fibre, an important part of a healthy diet. While it&#8217;s fine to have white bread for a change, a better everyday option is wholemeal bread.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">&#8220;Also, look out for the salt content of breads. Bread is one of the main sources of salt in our diets and bakery-made breads are often higher in salt than bread bought in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/supermarkets\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">supermarkets<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/0_Close-up-of-a-loaf-of-homemade-sourdough-bread-on-a-kitchen-worktop-in-sunlight.jpg\" alt=\"Close-up of a loaf of homemade sourdough bread on a kitchen worktop in sunlight\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Sourdough is a good choice if you are looking at your glycaemic intake(Image: Getty)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">&#8220;Although it may look more wholesome, sourdough from a bakery might be saltier than your usual loaf.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">She also revealed that sourdough&#8217;s effects on gut health have been exaggerated, explaining: &#8220;Eating other fermented foods like yoghurt and kimchi, with live bacteria in them, has been linked to good gut health.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">&#8220;However, in sourdough bread, the yeasts and bacteria that help with the rise are destroyed by the heat of the oven as it bakes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">Like all dietary guidance, it comes down to balance and eating a diverse range of foods, so there&#8217;s no need to avoid sourdough completely.
