(Image credit: United Launch Alliance)<\/p>\n<p id=\"605caf73-fb63-4014-a93b-f901a62ca410\">If all goes according to plan today, the Atlas V will deploy ViaSat-3 F2 into geostationary transfer orbit about 3.5 hours after liftoff. The satellite will then spend several months making its way to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/29222-geosynchronous-orbit.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/29222-geosynchronous-orbit.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">geostationary orbit<\/a> (GEO), a circular path that lies 22,236 miles (35,786 kilometers) above Earth.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"605caf73-fb63-4014-a93b-f901a62ca410-1\">At this altitude, orbital speed matches our planet&#8217;s rotational speed. Satellites in GEO therefore &#8220;hover&#8221; over the same patch of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth<\/a> continuously, making it a popular destination for spy and communications craft.<\/p>\n<p>ViaSat-3 F2 is expected to start beaming broadband service to customers in early 2026. As its name suggests, it will be the second ViaSat-3 satellite to do so, after ViaSat-3 F1, which launched atop a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SpaceX<\/a> Falcon Heavy rocket <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-falcon-heavy-sixth-mission-launch-viasat-3-americas\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-falcon-heavy-sixth-mission-launch-viasat-3-americas\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in April 2023<\/a>. A third such craft is expected to launch next year, rounding out the ViaSat-3 constellation.<\/p>\n<p>Each ViaSat-3 satellite is &#8220;designed to be capable of rapidly shifting capacity throughout its coverage area to deliver bandwidth where and when it\u2019s needed most,&#8221; Viasat, a California-based telecom company, wrote in a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.viasat.com\/about\/technology\/satellite-fleet\/viasat-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.viasat.com\/about\/technology\/satellite-fleet\/viasat-3\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">description of the mini constellation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is important to meet the increasing demand of commercial, consumer and defense customers, where the location of high-demand hotspots can change over the course of the day,&#8221; the company added.<\/p>\n<p>According to that description, ViaSat-3 F1 provides connectivity primarily to airline passengers.
