Phone thefts are <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-14636769\/phone-snatched-london-hospital-dont-make-mistake.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">estimated to cost Brits at least \u00a367million a year.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Commander James Conway, Scotland Yard\u2019s top officer on phone thefts, told the Mail: \u2018These are the same sort of gangs that are also running county lines operations and dealing [drugs] but are getting increasingly involved in robbery and theft.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018They can make a far greater profit than from dealing drugs in the same period of time with a lower risk from a criminal justice perspective.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018The sort of sentences you see for drug trafficking or drug dealing offences, and those you might receive for a series of thefts as a young person are very different.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Gang leaders use tried and tested methods to exploit young footsoldiers into snatching phones in the capital, often using specially adapted e-bikes which can reach speeds of up to 70mph.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018Either they\u2019re showering them with gifts of expensive trainers or clothing to draw them into a gang lifestyle, or they\u2019re giving them gifts to saddle them with a debt, which that young person then has to repay into the criminal gang. Ten days later it was pinging from a business centre in Hong Kong &#8211; where the Mail discovered hundreds of thousands of used devices from around the world (right)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The surge in thefts has been driven by the overseas demand closing a \u2018profitability gap\u2019 in the market, Mr Conway explained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018In the noughties, gangs stepped back from this area because in the UK we severed that link between a stolen phone and services \u2013 so you couldn\u2019t really use a stolen device in the same way,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018But they can be used in other markets, so there\u2019s now this huge profitability in robbery again.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Police forces have had some success in <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-13945159\/The-things-stop-phone-stolen-settings-activate-foil-thieves-nab-revealed-security-expert.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">combatting the surge in thefts<\/a>, but are calling on firms &#8211; but we can\u2019t arrest our way out of this.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">One thief, Sonny Stringer, 28, stole 24 phones worth \u00a320,000 in just one hour by <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-13493751\/how-one-of-londons-worst-e-bike-riding-phone-thieves-got-taken-down-officer-relives-the-moment-he-rammed-violent-thug-who-snatched-24-mobiles-worth-20000-in-just-one-hour.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">driving his electric bike round the city at speeds of up to 50mph and snatching them from pedestrians<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">He was jailed for two years at Isleworth Crown Court last August after being snared by City of London Police.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">It is difficult to determine the exact scale of the epidemic on Britain\u2019s streets due to differing recording techniques and the fact that many victims of theft and robbery <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-13639025\/criminal-boasts-wont-arrested-police-fail-tackle-thieves.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">fail to report crimes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Data from Essex Police, for example, indicates a 55 per cent surge in phone thefts in just four years, to 1,383 last year.<\/p>\n<p>   <img decoding=\"async\" id=\"i-220d4b948e6386dc\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/100638357-14941139-image-a-32_1753460548023.jpg\" height=\"336\" width=\"634\" alt=\"Stringer (above) drove his electric bike round the city at speeds of up to 50mph to snatch the devices from pedestrians before being caught and jailed for two years last August\" class=\"blkBorder img-share\" style=\"max-width:100%\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>   <\/p>\n<p class=\"imageCaption\">Stringer (above) drove his electric bike round the city at speeds of up to 50mph to snatch the devices from pedestrians before being caught and jailed for two years last August<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">In Kent, police recorded 1,722 mobile phone thefts in 2024, with 1,577 in South Yorkshire, 1,467 in the Lancashire force area and 1,115 in Nottinghamshire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Forces in rural areas naturally record fewer phone snatches, with Suffolk Police recording 337 last year, 402 in Lincolnshire and just 34 in Gloucestershire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">In the West Midlands, there were 4,990 phones reported stolen in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">In the year to November 2023, there were 7,159 phones reported stolen in Greater Manchester.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">A targeted operation in Liverpool involving marking phones led to a drop in thefts in the city centre from 1,360 reports in 2022\/23 to 490 in 2024\/25, saving an estimated \u00a3500,000 worth of property.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Inspector Dan Green, of City of London Police, said even when crooks such as Stringer are caught with the devices on them only half of the phones can be reunited with their owners because it is so difficult to match them with victims.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018We will know the phone is stolen, but if we can\u2019t find the IMEI number, we can\u2019t get into the phone, it\u2019s not got a medical ID on it then we can\u2019t find out whose phone it is,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018Also, someone might have reported their phone stolen but they don\u2019t know their IMEI number so there\u2019s nothing to marry them up with their phone.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">A Home Office spokesman said: &#8216;Mobile phone thefts, including snatch thefts and pickpocketing, remain unacceptably high.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;The Home Secretary brought together police leaders and tech companies earlier this year, where they agreed to boost intelligence sharing on phone theft in order to better understand and disrupt the business model driving this criminality on our streets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;This summer, over 500 town centres are benefitting from an enhanced police presence, and an additional 3,000 neighbourhood officers and community support officers will be on the beat by next spring.
