Pep Guardiola reacted with irritation after being questioned about his team selection for Manchester City’s Champions League<\/a> tie against Borussia Dortmund<\/a>. City hosted Dortmund on Wednesday night in a match which saw Erling Haaland<\/a> given the captain’s armband against his former club.<\/p>\n Haaland inevitably scored as City took control after just 30 minutes when the Norwegian goal machine smashed in Jeremy Doku’s cutback. His 18th strike of the season came after Phil Foden<\/a> found the bottom corner from the edge of the box.<\/p>\n Foden added a second goal with another excellent finish and substitute Rayan Cherki then ensured that Waldemar Anton’s goal was merely a consolation in a comfortable 4-1 win over City<\/a>.<\/p>\n City’s dominance came despite Guardiola choosing to rotate his squad following a 3-1 win over Bournemouth<\/a> on Sunday. He left Ruben Diaz and Bernardo Silva on the bench, with City facing another huge game against Liverpool in the Premier League<\/a> on Sunday.<\/p>\n But Guardiola was in no mood to answer questions on his decision in his pre-match interview with TNT Sports reporter Jules Breach.<\/p>\n READ MORE: Barcelona fans terrified as bus catches fire ahead of Champions League clash<\/a>READ MORE: Nottingham Forest donate \u00a310,000 to train knifeman victim stabbed six times<\/a><\/p>\n Asked whether the benching of Diaz and Silva was due to having one eye on the game against Liverpool<\/a>, Guardiola replied dead-pan: \u201cYou don\u2019t know me. After 10 seasons, I\u2019m sorry to tell you, you don\u2019t know me.\u201d<\/p>\n Pressed on his selection, he added: \u201cI never select a team which I don\u2019t believe is the best to win a game. Never, ever.\u201d The interview was then ended on that awkward note.<\/p>\n Guardiola made headlines in the build-up to the match by deciding to give his players an extra day off, rather than getting them on the training pitch. Asked earlier on in the interview by Breach if that could make the difference, he said: \u201cI\u2019ll tell you in two hours! If we win it\u2019s a benefit, if we lose it won\u2019t have been a benefit. The team is ready.\u201d<\/p>\n He was also quizzed on Haaland being captain for the night. He said: \u201cThe selection of Erling to be captain\u2026 he\u2019s one of the captains and one isn\u2019t playing and the other one cannot be here. He\u2019s a captain so he has to focus on what he needs to do, especially the game plan and the mentality you need to have to make an incredible step forward.\u201d<\/p>\n Rodri was another notable absentee, with the City midfielder not even on the bench. \u201cHe doesn\u2019t feel perfect, so that\u2019s why we don\u2019t take a risk,” Guardiola explained.<\/p>\n “He will come back\u2026 this little, little, little setback makes me realise everything, that we need a little more time to feel good and play football \u2013 doesn\u2019t matter if he plays good or bad \u2013 knowing that he\u2019s fine and he will not be out for a while.\u201d<\/p>\n Join our new WhatsApp community <\/a>and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
