It argues that the expansion of the universe may in fact be slowing down, not speeding up. The results, if borne out, might mean that the universe’s expansion will one day halt and reverse, culminating in a cosmos-ending “big crunch”.

• Never mind the Big Bang, universe could end with a big crunch

The study focuses on “type Ia supernovae” — exploding stars that have been used as cosmic mileposts. These blasts were long thought to reach the same peak brightness wherever they occurred. If that were true, their brightness when viewed from Earth would reveal how far away they are. In the 1990s, distant supernovae appeared unexpectedly faint, leading to the conclusion that the universe’s expansion was accelerating.

The new research, from a team at Yonsei University in South Korea, asks a simple question: what if some supernovae are naturally dimmer than others?

The authors argue that supernovae in younger galaxies are slightly fainter than those in older ones, possibly because younger galaxies contain more light-scattering dust. This matters because observing very distant galaxies means looking back in time: their light has taken billions of years to reach us. The young, far-away supernovae used to infer acceleration may have been dimmer to begin with, not necessarily farther away.

When the team corrected for this “age effect”, the supernova data told a different story. Instead of an accelerating universe, the corrected results lined up closely with another, completely independent measure of cosmic expansion: baryonic acoustic oscillations, or BAO — vast, faint ripples in the distribution of galaxies, left behind in the immediate aftermath of the Big Bang.

• Royal Society says ‘dimming’ the sun risky but may cool the planet

This combined analysis indicates that the universe’s expansion has already moved into a state of decelerated expansion. That implies dark energy is changing and weakening — a result at odds with what is known as the standard Lambda-CDM cosmological model, the leading theory of how the universe evolves, which assumes a constant form of dark energy.

It opens the door to the idea that the universe will not expand indefinitely, resulting in an outcome referred to as “heat death” where all matter spreads apart, resulting in chemistry, atoms and even time as we know it ceasing to exist. Instead, perhaps the cosmos will contract into an astonishingly dense singularity — a kernel of matter that might seed another Big Bang.

Professor Young-Wook Lee, of Yonsei University in Seoul, who led the research, said: “If these results are confirmed, it would mark a major paradigm shift in cosmology, the largest since the discovery of dark energy 27 years ago.”

• If aliens find Earth, they’ll probably come from this direction

Independent experts said the study, published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, is serious and thought-provoking, but urged caution.

“It’s an important paper,” said Ed Macaulay, a cosmologist at Queen Mary University of London who was not involved with the research. “It’s moving the needle in the same direction that other studies have been moving it for the past few years. It’s another piece of evidence that dark energy isn’t a simple cosmological constant.”

Professor Mark Sullivan, of the University of Southampton, said: “This new paper suggests that the brightness of these supernovae depends on the age of the star that explodes. Because only younger stars existed in the earlier universe, this could mean that supernovae seen at large distances, and therefore earlier times, are systematically different from nearby ones.”

However, Sullivan noted that this effect has been accounted for in previous studies. “What’s new here is the [size of the] proposed correction,” he said. “I am very cautious, if not sceptical. This may well not be the appropriate methodology for the cosmological correction.”

For decades, astronomers have believed that the universe is not only expanding, but doing so at an ever-increasing…

[23
90,416,56,54,55
0":"post-246850","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-space","8":"tag-science","9":"tag-space","10":"tag-uk","11":"tag-united-kingdom","12":"tag-unitedkingdom
["GET
