That’s a bit of a bummer as construction activity declines at its fastest pace in over five years in October. There were steep reductions in housing and civil engineering
\nactivity, as firms cited a lack of new work to replace completed projects. S&P Global notes that:<\/p>\n
“UK construction companies reported another
\nchallenging month in October as the prolonged weakening
\nof order books so far in 2025 resulted in the fastest
\ndecline in business activity for over five years. Civil
\nengineering and residential activity saw the fastest rates
\nof contraction, while commercial building showed some
\nresilience.\n<\/p>\n
“Reduced workloads were again widely attributed to risk
\naversion and delayed decision-making among clients,
\nwhich contributed to a slower-than-expected release of
\nnew projects. Subdued demand in the wake of heightened
\npolitical and economic uncertainty also led to the
\nsteepest drop in input buying since May 2020.\n<\/p>\n
“Meanwhile, some positive signals for the construction
\nsector in October included a slowdown in cost inflation to
\nits lowest for one year, rising subcontractor availability,
\nand a sustained improvement in supplier performance.\n<\/p>\n
“Looking ahead, business activity expectations for the
\ncoming 12 months remained much weaker than the
\nlong-run survey average, largely due to worries about
\nfragile investment sentiment and weak sales pipelines.
\nHowever, overall optimism levels edged up to the highest
\nsince July as the prospect of lower borrowing costs
