There are two types of golfers out there. The ones who like to get round as quickly as possible, and those who prefer to take their time, soak up the surroundings, and don\u2019t see golf as something that needs a stopwatch.<\/p>\n
The problem is that both types share the same golf courses. The faster players grow impatient when held up, while the slower ones resent being rushed around the course.<\/p>\n
To keep things moving \u2013 and to avoid backlogs \u2013 many clubs now post pace-of-play targets on their website, scorecards, or on signs around the course.<\/p>\n
But one club in New York has gone a step further \u2013 and it\u2019s caused quite the stir.<\/p>\n
Sleepy Hollow Country Club has gone viral after a photo appeared online showing its \u2018Pace of Play Offenses\u2019 sheet \u2013 a noticeboard listing the names and round times of anyone who went over the club\u2019s four-hour expected pace.<\/p>\n
Yes, if your group fails to finish in four hours, your names and times are pinned up in the clubhouse for everyone to see.<\/p>\n

Some applauded the club for drawing a line in the sand and taking pace seriously. Others thought it was a bit much \u2013 that golf\u2019s supposed to be a chance to slow down, not another place you\u2019re being timed.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s worth noting that Sleepy Hollow isn\u2019t just any golf course. It\u2019s a private members\u2019 club that has hosted Champions Tour events and the 2002 US Women\u2019s Amateur Championship. The course has been renovated by Gil Hanse and George Bahto, while the imposing clubhouse has been used in numerous films and TV shows. The course is stunning and the club clearly takes its standards seriously. <\/p>\n
Some who have played there felt the time pressure tarnished the experience:<\/p>\n
\n What sleepy does (as far as I can tell) is awful. I played there and the member was actually scared, we weee basically running up the hill on 18 despite having waited on lots of shots all day. It\u2019s idiotic.\n <\/p>\n
