The first trailer has been released for the upcoming\u00a0Michael Jackson<\/a>\u00a0biopic,\u00a0Michael\u00a0\u2013 check it out below.<\/p>\n

The film will see\u00a0the King of Pop\u2019s real-life nephew Jaafar Jackson take on the title role<\/a>, while\u00a0Oscar<\/a>\u00a0nominee Colman Domingo will play his father, Joe Jackson.\u00a0It will hit the big screen on April 24, 2026<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Antoine Fuqua, the filmmaker behind\u00a0Training Day\u00a0and\u00a0The Equalizer, will direct\u00a0Michael, while John Logan (Gladiator,\u00a0Skyfall<\/a>) serves as screenwriter. Nia Long (Empire,\u00a0Boyz n the\u00a0Hood) will play Jackson\u2019s mother Katherine, while\u00a0Miles Teller<\/a>\u00a0will portray John Branca, the lawyer and manager who is the co-executor of the Jackson estate\u00a0and a producer on the film.<\/p>\n

The trailer sees Jackson in the studio with Quincy Jones<\/a> as\u00a0they\u00a0prepare\u00a0to lay down a take of a song\u00a0apparently from\u00a0the\u00a0\u2018Thriller\u2019\u00a0era, interspersed with glimpses of him on stage and dealing with the\u00a0adulation of fans. The official synopsis reads: \u201cMichael\u00a0explores the global superstar\u2019s journey to become known to the world as the King\u00a0Of\u00a0Pop, presenting an intimate look at the life and enduring legacy of one of the most influential, trailblazing artists the world has ever known\u201d.<\/p>\n

It arrives 17 years after Jackson\u2019s death on June 25,\u00a02009,\u00a0at the age of 50. The cause of death was acute propofol intoxication, while the Los Angeles County coroner ruled the death as a homicide, and Jackson\u2019s doctor, Conrad Murray, was later convicted of involuntary manslaughter in connection with the artist\u2019s death.<\/p>\n

The film has already attracted some criticism,\u00a0including from\u00a0Dan Reed, the director of the documentary\u00a0Leaving Neverland,<\/a>\u00a0which documented allegations of sexual abuse against Michael. Reed\u00a0criticised the making of the new biopic, saying it \u201cwill glorify a man who raped children\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Reed later said he had read a draft of the script in which the men who made the allegations in\u00a0Leaving Neverland\u00a0were discredited<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cJackson is only ever seen caring for children with childhood cancer, or dancing with a little girl in a wheelchair, or tucking up multiple little boys, mostly his nephews, at sleepovers,\u201d Reed\u00a0said of\u00a0the script. \u201cIt feels like the creators of the movie have been stuck in a room with John Branca and just told what to write.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reports\u00a0emerged\u00a0at the start of this year that\u00a0the film had been delayed after they were forced to reshoot the third act\u00a0due to its unsanctioned portrayal of the Jordan Chandler case<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Domingo has defended the project, saying that \u201ceveryone has a story to tell\u201d<\/a>.\u00a0He said the film will look at the \u201ccomplex human being\u201d behind the star.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere,\u00a0the BBC recently revealed that it had ordered a new documentary charting the abuse allegations against Jackson<\/a>, with the working title\u00a0Legacy: Michael Jackson.
