When I open my phone and scroll down to the N\u2019s, I get a neat, full row dedicated entirely to Nintendo. That\u2019s four apps: the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2017\/7\/18\/15995098\/nintendo-switch-online-app-out-now-ios-android\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Switch app<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/10\/30\/24284073\/nintendo-music-streaming-app-switch-online-subscribers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the music app<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/637319\/nintendo-today-news-app\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Nintendo Today news app<\/a>, and now the store. (The tally increases to five if you\u2019re a parent using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/676982\/nintendo-switch-2-parental-controls-app-gamechat-restrictions\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Switch Parental Controls app<\/a>.) And it is entirely too much.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Nintendo has always been the one company of the big three publishers that does its own thing, and that\u2019s worked both for and against it. The company hasn\u2019t chased development trends with the same zeal as Microsoft and Sony. That insulates Nintendo when those trends don\u2019t pan out, like exorbitant spending on live-service games that fail. But also hurts it when it comes to performance and user experience. Console-native voice chat, for example, has been a standard on other platforms for a long time, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/24343637\/nintendo-switch-2-joy-con-c-button-controller\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">but was only offered on a Nintendo console with the Switch 2 this year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">With the deployment of these apps, Nintendo is both trying to innovate and playing catch-up with results that feel confusing and overwhelming. Do we really need four distinct apps? That\u2019s not to say these apps shouldn\u2019t exist; they serve valuable and necessary purposes. You need the store to buy things. While one doesn\u2019t need the Nintendo Today app, it does have useful features, like release date reminders, and it has been used to share announcements <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/638133\/legend-of-zelda-movie-premiere-date-2027\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">before they come down other official channels<\/a>. The music app also isn\u2019t a hard need, but Nintendo doesn\u2019t make its music available on streaming services, and searching YouTube for music can be hit or miss.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">It\u2019s also strange that the apps cannibalize features. I can see my play activity in both the store and the console app. The store also has a news page that\u2019s more robust than what\u2019s on offer in Nintendo Today. Could we not just combine all these into one central location? Nintendo is precious about its IP, sure, but why does that have to mean that instead of listening to official tracks on Spotify I have to download a bespoke app just for one company\u2019s library? Since using the music app requires a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, I wonder if siloing its music like this is a way to enhance the appeal of its subscription. I also wonder if it has anything to do with a reticence to pay royalties. In the music app, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/11\/5\/24288201\/nintendo-music-streaming-hands-on-impressions\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nintendo doesn\u2019t credit composers<\/a>, something it\u2019d be required to do if it offered its music up to streaming services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">As the gaming industry continues to mature, companies are realizing that not only are they in competition with other game makers for people\u2019s time and attention, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2020\/2\/5\/21123956\/microsoft-xbox-competitors-phil-spencer-cloud-gaming-amazon-google\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">but with social media too<\/a>. And while other companies try strategies like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/entertainment\/809053\/halo-playstation-xbox-multiplatform-strategy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bringing their exclusives to other platforms<\/a>, Nintendo seems to be going in a much more ambitious direction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Earlier this week, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nintendo.co.jp\/ir\/en\/management\/message.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in a statement posted on Nintendo\u2019s investor relations website<\/a>, president Shuntaro Furukawa wrote, \u201cWe hope for Nintendo to be a name that people naturally turn to, part of everyday life and there for families as they grow.\u201d You can see that strategy in products like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/24273422\/nintendo-alarmo-review-alarm-clock\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alarmo<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/go.skimresources.com\/?id=1025X1701640&amp;xs=1&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nintendo.com%2Fjp%2Fmy-mario%2Fgoods%2Findex.html\" rel=\"sponsored nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the My Mario children\u2019s line<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/entertainment\/797623\/pikmin-close-to-you-nintendo-pictures\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">its animation<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/analysis\/706610\/donkey-kong-movie-copyright-notice-nintendo-strategy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">movie projects<\/a>, theme parks, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/756718\/nintendo-super-mario-kids-hello-mario-free-app\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hello, Mario<\/a>, yet another app designed specifically for kids. That\u2019s a lot to have going on, and it\u2019s clear that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/5\/1\/23695720\/nintendo-mario-movie-billion-box-office\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">some strategies seem to be working<\/a>.
