Two of them, one a black man with a moustache and the other white, both wearing caps, have their hands outstretched pushing people back \" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 hLdNfA\"\/>Reuters<\/p>\n<p>More than 700 officers were deployed in Birmingham to police the match<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Hundreds of protesters descended on Birmingham to demonstrate at the controversial Aston Villa match against Maccabi Tel Aviv.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Eleven arrests were made amid a huge police operation, with more than 700 officers deployed for the Europa League match.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">A large number of pro-Palestinian supporters waved banners and flags outside Villa Park, while a smaller group of pro-Israeli campaigners marched towards the ground in the wake of <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c4gk9gz1y7ro\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 iCaRzc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the decision to ban away fans from the game.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Ch Supt Tom Joyce said the vast police presence had been necessary due to several groups arranging protests and counter-protests ahead of the game. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 gUePlo hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/8624cd00-bb4d-11f0-aa13-0b0479f6f42a.jpg.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"PA Media A large crowd gathers outside Villa Park. We police protests a lot. We deal with all sorts of public order scenarios, but certainly the level of interest, the level of concern around this match is pretty unprecedented.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Among those arrested were five people on suspicion of racially aggravated public order offences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">One man, 21, was arrested after allegedly trying to throw fireworks into the ground, while another was arrested on suspicion of possessing drugs with intention to supply.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Another 21-year-old was arrested for failing to comply with an order to remove a face mask, and a boy of 17 was held for failing to comply with a dispersal order. The group are carrying flags.\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 hLdNfA\"\/>Reuters<\/p>\n<p>Pro-Palestinian protesters voiced their anger about the match <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Villa supporter Adam Selway turned up for the match wearing a half-and-half scarf in the colours of the home side and Maccabi Tel Aviv.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The 48-year-old said he felt sympathy with fans unable to attend and simply wanted to watch a football match, but that he was not making any political statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s not about politics, it&#8217;s about football,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It&#8217;s not the Villa fans that don&#8217;t want anyone here \u2013 the Villa fans want the away fans here.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Earlier, those living and working in the city near Villa Park saw shops and schools close early.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Jewish Villa fan Elliot Ludvig described his apprehension about attending the match.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Mr Ludvig, who was going to the game with his son, told the BBC: &#8220;I&#8217;m apprehensive about what&#8217;s going to happen. I&#8217;m apprehensive about the potential for violence for one thing. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;I&#8217;m apprehensive about various unpleasantries that we might encounter along the way, both outside the stadium and inside the stadium.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Football unites us&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">He said his other major emotion was &#8220;disappointment&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;Is it worth going to a football game to potentially put myself at some sort of risk and or expose my son to to all sorts of unpleasantries which you might not want to?,&#8221; he asked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Those who called for calm included one fan group, the Punjabi Villans, which urged people to respect each other and for everyone to get home safely, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/PunjabiVillans\/status\/1986411140260503962\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 iCaRzc\" rel=\"nofollow\">posting on social media<\/a>: &#8220;We&#8217;re in this together. He is looking at the camera with a concerned expression.\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 hLdNfA\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Elliot Ludvig said he was apprehensive and disappointed<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">On Wednesday night, the chief executive of Maccabi Tel Aviv, Jack Angelides, said it was &#8220;incredibly sad&#8221; his side&#8217;s fans could not be there, adding: &#8220;<a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/football\/articles\/c781xdjn0qwo\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 iCaRzc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Politics should never be drawn into football<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">As plans for protests were drawn up earlier in the week, Naeem Malik, chair of West Midlands Palestine Solidarity Campaign, said there had been <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cdeg6jw6p8jo\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 iCaRzc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">national outrage over the hosting of the Israeli team<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;The calls to cancel this match have been ignored despite the risks that it carries, therefore we must urge activists to unite in protest against this match,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 gUePlo hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/958f0530-bb3e-11f0-9494-47f20ee206c1.jpg.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Reuters Protesters hold signs outside the stadium before the match.
