{"id":248892,"date":"2025-11-07T07:36:18","date_gmt":"2025-11-07T07:36:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/248892\/"},"modified":"2025-11-07T07:36:18","modified_gmt":"2025-11-07T07:36:18","slug":"systemic-irregularities-and-300-billion-lost-nigerias-oil-sector-faces-a-terrible-problem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/248892\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cSystemic irregularities\u201d and $300 billion lost, Nigeria\u2019s oil sector faces a terrible problem"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n        Led by a senator in the West African country\u2019s southern region, Ned Nwoko, a committee was set up earlier this year to look into some of the oil sector\u2019s most prominent challenges, including oil theft, bunkering operations, illegal export networks, and alleged compromises within regulatory and security systems.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n        What was eventually discovered and disclosed by the head of the Ad Hoc Committee were \u201csystemic irregularities, poor measurement standards, and weak enforcement\u201d across the petroleum value chain.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n        As a result, the report issued several recommendations to ensure that Nigeria is able to retain the absurd sums it loses annually in its most lucrative sector.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n        \u201cWe are proposing to go straight to the recommendations as the full report is voluminous,\u201d said Ned Nwoko.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n        \u201cThe committee, after extensive assessment, recommends that the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission should strictly enforce internationally accepted crude oil measurement standards at all production sites and export terminals,\u201d he added.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n        As seen in the <a href=\"https:\/\/punchng.com\/senate-probes-300bn-crude-oil-losses\/\" id=\"e3d36af0-f963-471f-b206-bdaf77550b1a\" data-link-role-code=\"open_new_tab\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Punch<\/a>, the report also recommended that the Government ensure that there are security services with unmanned aerial vehicles and other contemporary surveillance technologies to keep an eye on export routes and pipelines.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n        Additionally, it advised the creation of a Maritime Trust Fund to improve interagency intelligence operations, infrastructure, and maritime security.\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n        Senator Abdul Ningi, a senator from the Northern region of the country, lauded the findings in the report and gave his suggestions, noting that the house should focus on the \u201cdirect recovery of stolen funds exceeds the powers of the legislature.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n        \u201cWe can track and trace, but recovery is beyond the powers of the Senate.
