{"id":249713,"date":"2025-11-07T17:35:23","date_gmt":"2025-11-07T17:35:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/249713\/"},"modified":"2025-11-07T17:35:23","modified_gmt":"2025-11-07T17:35:23","slug":"southend-and-basildon-hospitals-leadership-rated-inadequate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/249713\/","title":{"rendered":"Southend and Basildon hospitals leadership rated inadequate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  Following an inspection in May this year, a report published by the Care Quality Commission today has rated leadership at the Mid and South Essex NHS Trust as inadequate \u2013 the lowest possible rating.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The trust provides care for 1.2 million people and employs 16,800 staff at Southend, Broomfield and Basildon hospitals.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The CQC found \u201cserious and systemic failures\u201d in leadership and organisational culture that it said were putting patients at risk and leaving staff feeling \u201cunsupported and undervalued\u201d.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Trust chief executive Dawn Scrafield has apologised in the wake of the report and insisted improvements are already being made.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Hazel Roberts, CQC deputy director of operations in the East of England, said: \u201cDuring our well-led inspection of Mid and South Essex NHS Trust, we found serious and systemic failures in leadership and organisational culture that\u00a0were\u00a0putting people at risk and leaving staff feeling unsupported and\u00a0undervalued.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cLeaders were aware of many of the challenges they faced but were unable to demonstrate how services would improve at the pace and scale required.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cDespite numerous improvement programmes, we found persistent quality and safety failures that led to enforcement action in maternity, children and young people, and urgent and emergency care services.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cStaff across all three hospital sites told us they felt disconnected from senior leaders, undervalued, and unable to raise concerns without fear.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The inspection found widespread issues, including delays in mandatory reviews of patient deaths, confusion over leadership responsibilities, and low staff morale.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The trust also performed poorly in national standards for ambulance handovers and cancer waiting times, and lacked a formal leadership strategy or effective appraisal system.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  In response, chief executive Dawn Scrafield said: \u201cWe are deeply sorry for having failed our patients and staff.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cWe know that they deserve better from us.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cWe fully accept the findings of the report and are committed to bringing about the improvements needed as quickly and sustainably as possible.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cWe have begun to make the changes needed with a detailed improvement plan supported by a new organisational structure which will simplify the way in which we operate to clarify roles and accountabilities.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cOur new operating model will strengthen clinical leadership across the Trust and equip our hospitals to deliver high quality care.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Following an inspection in May this year, a report published by the Care Quality Commission today has rated&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":249714,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[43],"tags":[102,2960,56,54,55],"class_list":{"0":"post-249713","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-healthcare","8":"tag-health","9":"tag-healthcare","10":"tag-uk","11":"tag-united-kingdom","12":"tag-unitedkingdom"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/249713","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=249713"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/249713\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/249714"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=249713"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=249713"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=249713"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
