The top level of &#8216;cross racing in Europe launched in recent weeks with the Exact Cross, Superprestige, and X2O Trofee series all getting underway.<\/p>\n<p>Riders such as Lucinda Brand and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/riders\/michael-vanthourenhout\/\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/riders\/michael-vanthourenhout\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Michael Vanthourenhout<\/a> have enjoyed hot starts to the campaign, and world champion <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/riders\/fem-van-empel\/\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/riders\/fem-van-empel\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fem van Empel<\/a> and European champion Thibau Nys have also added their names to the early honour rolls.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"7422561c-6e39-4a30-aa01-16de99a137a4-2\">But, as has often been the case in recent seasons, a shadow \u2013 well, a trio of shadows \u2013 hangs over the scene. The biggest stars of men&#8217;s cyclocross, the riders who have shared the last 11 world titles, are yet to put tyre to dirt this season.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Around this time every year, the same question rears its head. He won every race, but didn&#8217;t start his season until the World Cup round in Zonhoven on December 12.<\/p>\n<p>The Dutchman is <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DQuT823jEwg\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DQuT823jEwg\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">currently in Spain training alongside his frequent training partner Freddy Ovett<\/a>, and so it doesn&#8217;t look like he&#8217;ll be hitting the mud of Northern Europe quite yet.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll have to wait until the unveiling of the &#8216;cross Worlds route at the end of this month for his team to reveal when he&#8217;ll be back in action.<\/p>\n<p>Taking that timing into consideration, and given that his previous two seasons have started in mid-December, an educated guess would say similar this time around, too.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-wout-van-aert-visma-lease-a-bike\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike)<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:66.70%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/iBnNsRi9q8NjSUWNpr5SrA.jpg\" alt=\"Belgian Wout van Aert pictured in action during the men's elite race at the cyclocross cycling event in Benidorm, Spain, Sunday 19 January 2025, stage 12\/14 in the UCI World Cup competition. Perhaps a 2025-26 season debut at the start of December is on the cards.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I want to wait a few weeks of training first to see when it makes sense to resume. There&#8217;s also a long road season ahead, so we need to plan wisely,&#8221; Van Aert told <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wielerflits.nl\/nieuws\/wout-van-aert-licht-tipje-van-de-sluier-over-crossprogramma\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.wielerflits.nl\/nieuws\/wout-van-aert-licht-tipje-van-de-sluier-over-crossprogramma\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">WielerFlits<\/a> last week at Tim Declercq&#8217;s farewell criterium.<\/p>\n<p>Van Aert took a post-season holiday with his family before <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/news\/wout-van-aert-returns-from-holidays-to-resume-training-ahead-of-winter-cyclocross-season\/\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/news\/wout-van-aert-returns-from-holidays-to-resume-training-ahead-of-winter-cyclocross-season\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">he resumed some training at the end of October<\/a>. He took sixth place at the UCI Gravel World Championships the next day before heading on holiday and then returning to the gravel bike at the end of October for the week-long South African stage race, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/news\/i-have-been-suffering-all-year-i-dont-want-to-suffer-here-tom-pidcock-earns-a-stage-victory-at-gravel-burn-while-matt-beers-holds-lead-with-two-days-to-go\/\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/news\/i-have-been-suffering-all-year-i-dont-want-to-suffer-here-tom-pidcock-earns-a-stage-victory-at-gravel-burn-while-matt-beers-holds-lead-with-two-days-to-go\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gravel Burn, where he won a stage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So far, there have been no public pronouncements on this year&#8217;s cyclocross season from Pidcock, but it seems unlikely.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is very little chance that Tom will race this winter, but it cannot be ruled out,&#8221; his coach Kurt Bogaerts told <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/sporza.be\/nl\/2025\/10\/08\/tom-pidcock-staat-voor-knotsgek-weekend-met-lombardije-en-wk-gravel-ze-hebben-het-ons-niet-makkelijk-gemaakt~1759917741747\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/sporza.be\/nl\/2025\/10\/08\/tom-pidcock-staat-voor-knotsgek-weekend-met-lombardije-en-wk-gravel-ze-hebben-het-ons-niet-makkelijk-gemaakt~1759917741747\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Sporza<\/a> last month.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We just have to make sure Tom has enough rest and build-up periods.
