{"id":249864,"date":"2025-11-07T19:20:12","date_gmt":"2025-11-07T19:20:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/249864\/"},"modified":"2025-11-07T19:20:12","modified_gmt":"2025-11-07T19:20:12","slug":"could-you-be-the-new-voice-of-shetland-on-local-radio-and-beyond","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/249864\/","title":{"rendered":"Could you be the new voice of Shetland on local radio and beyond?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shetnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/logo_2018.jpg\" data-fancybox=\"images\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-post-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/logo_2018-470x470.jpg\" \/><\/a>BBC RADIO Shetland are on the lookout for a junior journalist apprentice to join the team at the Pitt Lane station.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re a recent school leaver or are about to finish and university isn\u2019t for you, this apprenticeship programme, starting in September 2026, offers first-class journalism training and hands-on experience to set you up for a successful future in the industry.<\/p>\n<p>Many reporters who started at Radio Shetland have become well-known household names at the BBC and far beyond, including Jen Stout, Phil Goodlad and Jonathan Sutherland.<\/p>\n<p>Jonathan Sutherland\u00a0\u2013 Sports Presenter<\/p>\n<p>BBC Scotland sports presenter Jonathan Sutherland with former Celtic footballer Shaun Maloney<\/p>\n<p>Before turning into a familiar for many football fans across Scotland, Jonathan Sutherland started his broadcasting career as a presenter on Good Evening Shetland.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had a vague sense I wanted to be a journalist, but I\u2019d never even thought about talking out loud on the radio or TV,\u201d he recalls.<\/p>\n<p>He had just been turned down for work experience at The Shetland Times when his mam suggested he tried the radio instead.<\/p>\n<p>Jonathan says it was the kindness, patience and guidance of his new colleagues that changed him from a \u201cquivering wreck\u201d to a confident presenter.\u00a0\u201c<\/p>\n<p>And then the epiphany when I\u2019d found my feet that this was the BBC \u2013 global organisation, a window to the world \u2013 I could explore new horizons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As a massive football fan, Jonathan applied for a job at BBC Sport, and the rest is history: \u201cI never really dreamed I would end up presenting Sportscene on the telly, going to international football tournaments and travelling the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor my 15-year-old self, growing up in Brae, that would have seemed utterly impossible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He adds: \u201cBut it became possible because I walked through the door of Radio Shetland one day, and for that I will be forever thankful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Phil Goodlad\u00a0\u2013 Sports Presenter\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Unlike Jonathan, Phil Goodlad always knew he wanted to become a radio presenter, so working at the local station was a no-brainer.<\/p>\n<p>But, he says, it\u2019s not just something you simply fall into.<\/p>\n<p>Originally from Yell, young Phil spent many of night on floors of relatives and friends in Lerwick so he could be in the office on time for holiday jobs with the BBC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWatching, listening and learning how stories are turned into an item on air at teatime from a morning phone call or chat \u2018we somebody on da street\u2019 was, and still is, fascinating,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Although he has since become the voice of Scottish sport on BBC Radio Scotland Breakfast, the time he spent at Pitt Lane is still the backbone of his working day.<\/p>\n<p>And his advice to anybody who would like to follow in his footsteps?\u201cKnow what you want to do and go for it.
