A flicker of tension appeared in the Nys household last weekend \u2014 a reminder that even Belgium\u2019s most famous cycling family isn\u2019t immune to a bit of friction. For all their shared success in cyclocross, Niels Albert<\/a> believes father and son Sven and Thibau Nys<\/a> couldn\u2019t be more different in temperament, attitude, and approach to the sport.<\/p>\n

Speaking to HLN, the former world champion offered a fascinating insight into the generational gap between the two. \u201cThibau is basically the complete opposite of his father. In terms of attitude, he\u2019s actually more like me than Sven,\u201d Albert said. \u201cThere are two full generations between them, and I think riders like Thibau approach the sport in a totally different way.\u201d<\/p>\n

Albert suggested that Sven\u2019s legendary attention to detail \u2014 sometimes bordering on obsession \u2014 simply doesn\u2019t fit the younger Nys\u2019 character. \u201cSven would go so far as to weigh every bottle of still water, almost to the point of mania,\u201d Albert laughed. \u201cThibau, on the other hand, is the sort of guy who\u2019d say, \u2018Come on, dad, stop nagging.\u2019 I can just picture him saying that. I\u2019m sure it drives Sven a bit mad \u2014 but that\u2019s part of the fun.\u201d<\/p>\n


\n\u201cA better all-round rider than his father\u201d<\/p>\n

While the differences between them are clear, Albert also sees huge potential in Thibau\u2019s more relaxed approach. \u201cHis riding style does remind me of his father \u2014 it has to come from somewhere,\u201d he admitted. \u201cBut as a rider, I think he\u2019s completely different from Sven. I actually believe he has more talent, in the sense that he can also perform on the road. Sven was a phenomenal cyclocross rider, but Thibau has abilities that his father didn\u2019t have. He\u2019s a better all-rounder.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite his once-fierce rivalry with Sven Nys<\/a>, Albert has become one of Thibau\u2019s biggest supporters. What impresses him most, he says, is the young Belgian\u2019s personality. \u201cIn recent years, most riders have been very polite and restrained,\u201d Albert reflected. \u201cThibau always speaks his mind, isn\u2019t afraid to express his ambitions, and wants to prove himself. I like that \u2014 it\u2019s refreshing.\u201d<\/p>\n
