John McGinn is a modern-day Aston Villa legend, and supporters will be delighted that he will continue carving his legacy in B6.

McGinn was signed for a bargain £2.8million from Hibernian in the summer of 2018, and since then, the Scottish machine has become Aston Villa’s beating heart.

From winning promotion to the Championship in 2019 to qualifying for the Champions League in 2024, the 31-year-old has endured a journey few get to experience during their careers.

The Scotsman embodies exactly what it means to wear claret and blue, combining his incredible levels of energy, tenacity and skill to lead Unai Emery’s men into their most successful period in decades.

So, when McGinn signed a new contract at Aston Villa until 2028 on Wednesday (November 5), supporters were understandably delighted.

A new deal for the all-action midfielder put an end to any distant transfer speculation, as McGinn drew interest from Newcastle and Everton in August.

Football Insider also revealed that Celtic have been strong admirers of McGinn, yet the Villa captain only ever wanted to remain in B6.

MORE FOOTBALL INSIDER STORIES

“I had no thoughts really about leaving. It was a little bit of a confidence booster for me, at the age I am, that teams would be interested,” McGinn said via the Birmingham Mail.

“But I think most clubs around the country were aware that we had to be in a selling position this summer, so no one was not safe from that, but no one was unavailable for transfer.

“But when my situation arose, the club made it clear from the first minute that I wasn’t for sale and I was important here. I’m the captain, and I was valued still so highly. They made that clear.

“There was no sort of grey area. I was told right away, so from that day my head was completely fine. I trusted those that said it – the manager, Damian, Nassef, Wes – they were all clear that they wanted me to be around, and they still felt that I had so much more to give.”

Loyalty is rare in football these days, as players will regularly jump ship at the chance to earn more money.

But McGinn understands the importance of being valued and knows he isn’t getting the same level of treatment elsewhere.

That is why the former Hibernian man is on his way to becoming a Villa legend – if he isn’t already – and he can cement that legacy by lifting a trophy.

The last time the Villans lifted silverware was the League Cup in 1996, and how supporters would love him to win the Europa League or FA Cup this season.

Credit: Imago Fri 7 November 2025 18:15, UK John McGinn is a modern-day Aston Villa legend, and supporters…

[33
2604,218,35844,101,56,54,55
post-250065","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-football","tag-aston-villa","tag-football","tag-john-mcginn","tag-sports","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom
["GET
