{"id":250859,"date":"2025-11-08T08:01:10","date_gmt":"2025-11-08T08:01:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/250859\/"},"modified":"2025-11-08T08:01:10","modified_gmt":"2025-11-08T08:01:10","slug":"extreme-no-food-diet-nhs-is-prescribing-to-record-numbers-to-reverse-diabetes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/250859\/","title":{"rendered":"Extreme \u2018no food\u2019 diet NHS is prescribing to record numbers to reverse diabetes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Type 2 diabetes patients have been put into remission &#8211; something previously thought impossible &#8211; by the NHS \u2018soups and shakes\u2019 diet<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1_NHS.jpg\" alt=\"NHS soups and shakes\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>NHS soups and shakes are part of a diabetes plan<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">Record numbers of people have been put on a \u201csoups and shakes\u201d diet by the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/nhs\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NHS<\/a> to reverse their diabetes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">Over 30,000 people have now been put on the 12-month total diet replacement programme which provides soups, shakes and bars. This completely replaces normal food for the first 12 weeks then participants are slowly weaned back on to healthy food.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">A recent study found one in three patients on the diet programme put their Type 2 diabetes into remission &#8211; something which was once thought impossible. It is a leading cause of preventable sight loss in people of working age and contributes to kidney failure, lower limb amputation, heart attack, stroke and cancers.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/0_A-womans-feet-on-a-weight-scale.jpg\" alt=\"Woman on scales\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The weight initially falls off then participant are helped to maintain it(Image: Getty Images\/MILATAS)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">The soups and shakes are provided by the NHS and consist of between 800 and 900 calories a day. The normal UK recommended calorie intake for the average adult is 2,500 kcal for men and 2,000 kcal for women to maintain their weight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">Participants are then coached by clinicians to gradually reintroduce healthy, nutritious food to maintain weight loss and their progress is monitored.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">Colette Marshall, chief executive at Diabetes UK, said: \u201cFor almost two decades, Diabetes UK has proudly spearheaded research that has redefined how type 2 diabetes is treated and managed \u2013 turning the possibility of remission into reality for some.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/0_General-practitioner-measuring-waist-of-obese-patient.jpg\" alt=\"Man on scales\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Type 2 diabetes is the leading cause of lower limb amputation(Image: Getty Images\/Science Photo Library RF)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">\u201cRemission can transform lives, offering people with a recent diagnosis of type 2 diabetes a better chance of a healthier future, helping them live well and reduce the risk of devastating diabetes-related complications.
