With \u201cStar Wars\u201d finally getting back to cinemas with \u201cThe Mandalorian & Grogu,\u201d \u201cStar Wars: Starfighter\u201d and the 50th anniversary re-release of the original, it begs the question \u2013 will people finally shut up about \u201cStar Wars: The Last Jedi\u201d?<\/p>\n

The answer is almost certainly not. Rian Johnson\u2019s film will likely always remain one of (if not the) most polarising \u201cStar Wars\u201d films ever made.<\/p>\n

Johnson was linked to write and direct a potential new \u201cStar Wars\u201d trilogy back in 2017, but his \u201cKnives Out\u201d and \u201cPoker Face\u201d commitments kept him away and the project just seemed to fall by the wayside.<\/p>\n

Johnson is moving on to other stuff now, but out promoting the third \u201cKnives Out\u201d film recently at the Newport Beach Film Festival, Johnson discussed \u2018The Last Jedi\u2019 and was asked if the film\u2019s response pushed him away from the Star Wars universe. He says:<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, not at all. In fact, it\u2019s the reason that I wanted to. My overall experience with putting the movie out, and what you\u2019re talking about with fan feedback. I mean, first of all, I\u2019m a lifelong Star Wars fan. So I know the deal. I know that Star Wars fans are passionate about this stuff. We love the stuff we love, we hate the stuff we hate, and we fight about it. And that\u2019s been happening since the original trilogy.<\/p>\n

The reality is Star Wars has always been something that has meant different things to different people, and I think that\u2019s part of the fun and the passion of it as fans, is arguing about it respectfully. Its been the most positive experience I\u2019ve ever had with anything I\u2019ve made, in terms of interacting with people who\u2019ve seen it. I came out at the other end of it loving Star Wars fandom more than I did even going into it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fan reaction ranged from major praise to outright hatred over the creative choices, nonetheless the film was a $1.33 billion earner and the highest-grossing film of 2017 and on Metacritic remains the most acclaimed film of the series outside the original 1977 film.<\/p>\n
