The Narendra Modi government earned a significant Rs 800 crore by selling scrap during a massive cleanliness drive last month \u2014 this significantly exceeds the budget of Chandrayaan-3 that successfully landed on the moon at a cost of Rs 615 crore.<\/p>\n
News18 has learnt that this year\u2019s figures have brought the total government earnings from selling scrap, since the annual campaign began in 2021, to nearly Rs 4,100 crore.<\/p>\n
In this year\u2019s campaign, held between October 2 and 31, maximum office space ever was freed amounting to 232 lakh sq ft, and the highest number of 29 lakh physical files were weeded out. This was also the largest exercise in scale, covering nearly 11.58 lakh office sites. <\/p>\n
Under the aegis of the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DAR&PG), effective inter-ministerial coordination across 84 ministries and departments, including missions abroad, was achieved. Three senior ministers, Mansukh Mandaviya, K Ram Mohan Naidu, and Dr Jitendra Singh, oversaw the entire exercise.<\/p>\n
Between 2021 and 2025, the Centre has conducted five successful special campaigns that have helped institutionalise swachhata (cleanliness) and reduce pendency in government. The cumulative progress achieved in these five campaigns includes covering 23.62 lakh offices under the \u2018Swachhata\u2019 campaign, freeing 928.84 lakh sq ft space, weeding out or closing 166.95 lakh files, and earning Rs 4,097.24 crore from the sale of scrap.<\/p>\n
This year, cabinet ministers and ministers of state from various ministries reviewed the campaign, held regular interactions with staff, and conducted a ministerial review meeting on reducing the pendency of public grievances. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been urging ministries to perform under the special campaign.<\/p>\n
