Alexander Zverev could meet Joao Fonseca in the third round at the ATP Masters 1000 in Canada.

Alexander Zverev<\/a> could face an early showdown against #NextGenATP Brazilian Joao Fonseca<\/a> at the National Bank Open Presented by Rogers<\/a> after being placed in the same section of the Toronto draw on Friday.<\/p>\n

Top seed Zverev will meet Adam Walton<\/a> or Benjamin Bonzi<\/a> in his opening match and could play Fonseca in the third round. The 18-year-old Fonseca, who earned his maiden Top 10 win against Andrey Rublev<\/a> at the Australian Open<\/a>, faces a qualifier on his tournament debut and would play 32nd-seeded Italian Matteo Arnaldi<\/a> in the second round if he advances.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Zverev\u2019s best result in Toronto came in 2018 when he reached the quarter-finals, but the German did win the crown in Montreal in 2017. The 28-year-old is seeded to meet Holger Rune<\/a> in the quarter-finals and Lorenzo Musetti<\/a> in the semi-finals.<\/p>\n

Rune could play Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard<\/a> in his opening match. The big-serving Frenchman leads the Dane 1-0 in the pair\u2019s Lexus ATP Head2Head series. The No. 9 in the PIF ATP Rankings Rune withdrew from Washington due to a back injury but on Friday shared an update via social media informing fans of his successful recovery.<\/p>\n

Musetti opens against #NextGenATP Chinese lefty Juncheng Shang<\/a> or a qualifier. The Italian is seeded to face 16th seed Tomas Machac<\/a> in the last 16 and eighth seed Casper Ruud<\/a> in the quarter-finals.<\/p>\n

In the bottom half of the draw, American stars Ben Shelton<\/a> and Frances Tiafoe<\/a> could renew their intriguing Lexus ATP Head2Head rivalry in the quarter-finals. Shelton leads Tiafoe 2-1, with all three of their past meetings coming in the US. They are set to face off on Friday at the ATP 500 event in Washington.<\/p>\n

Two-time tour-level titlist Flavio Cobolli<\/a> is a potential fourth-round opponent for Shelton, while Tiafoe is seeded to meet Alex de Minaur<\/a> in the last 16.<\/p>\n

Second seed Taylor Fritz<\/a> seeks his second ATP Masters 1000 crown and faces Camilo Ugo Carabelli<\/a> or Roberto Carballes Baena<\/a> in his opening match. The American might face sixth seed Andrey Rublev<\/a> in the quarter-finals.<\/p>\n

Alexei Popyrin<\/a> won the title in Canada last year and begins against Laslo Djere<\/a> or Nicolas Arseneault<\/a>. The 2021 champion and 10th seed Daniil Medvedev<\/a> is in the same section as Rune and starts against Luciano Darderi<\/a> or a qualifier. Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime<\/a> will take on Fabian Marozsan<\/a> or Hugo Dellien<\/a> in his opening match, while Denis Shapovalov<\/a> meets #NextGenATP American Learner Tien<\/a> or a qualifier.<\/p>\n

The ATP Masters 1000 event begins Sunday, with the final on Thursday 7 August. It is the first year the event has been an expanded 12-day event.<\/p>\n
