Walk into the supermarket and you\u2019re faced with an array of sweet treats; unlock your phone and there\u2019s a range of entertaining alternatives to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/health-and-fitness\/exercise-snacking-workouts-b2783829.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">exercise<\/a>. Anything good for us seems usually seems less appealing than the prospect of sugary snacks and doomscrolling. But there are a few experts hoping to change that.<\/p>\n<p>NHS surgeon <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.drkaranrajan.com\/about\">Dr Karan Rajan<\/a> is on a mission to make <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/health\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">healthier<\/a> options more accessible for the masses. He uses his medical expertise to simplify the science of wellbeing, then provide low-cost, actionable advice people can benefit from \u2013 and his approach is working. <\/p>\n<p>Dr Rajan has amassed more than five million Tiktok followers and recently released his first book, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/buy.geni.us\/Proxy.ashx?tsid=3658&amp;articleId=b2791799&amp;GR_URL=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.co.uk%2FThis-Book-Save-Your-Life%2Fdp%2F1804947784%2Fref%3Dasc_df_1804947784%3Fascsubtag%3DIN%7C2791799%7C1804947784\">This Book May Save Your Life<\/a>, which contains a collection of \u201ceveryday health hacks to worry less and live better\u201d. He has a theory as to why his videos and the concept for this book are so popular. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cHealthcare systems in most countries have flaws,\u201d Dr Rajan tells The Independent. \u201cIt\u2019s harder to see a healthcare professional in some cases, particularly for chronic diseases. It\u2019s also expensive if you are going down the private route. People are realising that prevention is a cheaper, more effective longer-term solution for health than treatment when burdened with disease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/nutrition\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nutrition<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/health-and-fitness\/gut-health-nutrition-diet-b2789919.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">gut health<\/a> are areas his audience are particularly interested in, Dr Rajan adds, explaining: \u201c[Both are] often easy to action but also poorly understood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps as a consequence of this, one of his favourite health hacks is a remarkably simple three-ingredient recipe that can support muscle maintenance and gut health. This is how to make it. <\/p>\n<p>How to make Dr Karan Rajan\u2019s three-ingredient gut health snack <\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-affiliate=\"true\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/redirect.viglink.com?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.tiktok.com%2F%40dr.karanr%2Fvideo%2F7503223991402876182%3Flang%3Den&amp;articleId=b2791799&amp;key=5b1a6400a3c0d931ed2037885e1a27a3\">Ingredients: <\/p>\n<p>Raspberries, 80g Chia seeds, one tbsp Kefir yoghurt, 250g <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a great combo that\u2019s high in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/life-style\/health-and-families\/high-fibre-foods-goals-health-b2787883.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fibre<\/a>, protein and the three Ps; prebiotics, probiotics and polyphenols,\u201d says Dr Rajan.<\/p>\n<p>To make it, start by microwaving 80g of frozen raspberries for 30 seconds, then mashing them to your \u201cdesired level of chunkiness\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA dark red colour tells you they\u2019re a rich source of the antioxidant anthocyanin,\u201d Dr Rajan adds in the video above. \u201cThis supports beneficial microbes in your gut, and this [amount of raspberries] also contains 5g of fibre.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Next, stir in one tablespoon of chia seeds until you achieve a consistency you\u2019re happy with. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust one tablespoon of chia seeds is enough to thicken the mixture to a jam-like consistency,\u201d Dr Rajan continues. \u201cIt also has five grams of fibre and mucilage your gut bacteria can ferment to nourish your colon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At this point, you can add an optional dollop of honey for extra sweetness. This macronutrient fills a wide variety of vital functions, including building and repairing bodily tissues such as muscle. <\/p>\n<p>But Dr Rajan says fibre should also be a key consideration in the make-up of your plate. In fact, he goes so far as to say eating more fibre is the health hack that offers the greatest return on investment for most people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth protein and fibre are essential,\u201d he says. \u201cThere are plenty of foods and meal combos where you can get both, but if I had to over-index on one, it would be fibre.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d say the average person probably consumes enough protein and nowhere near enough fiber,\u201d Dr Rajan continues. The recommended daily allowance for dietary fibre is 30g for adults, but most people currently manage less than 20g, seeing them miss out on plenty of health benefits. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen it comes to human physiology, there [aren\u2019t many processes] fibre isn\u2019t involved in, either directly or indirectly.
