A man says a \u00a310,000\u00a0gold bar, which he planned to use for part of his pension, has been lost by Royal Mail. <\/p>\n
Rob Hobson bought a 100g gold\u00a0Britannia\u00a0bar\u00a0from his dad\u2019s inheritance and had agreed a buyback offer from the\u00a0Royal\u00a0Mint after it was valued at \u00a39,731.<\/p>\n
But despite sending it special delivery and with extra insurance, the\u00a0bar\u00a0never arrived at its destination.<\/p>\n
Royal\u00a0Mail has launched an investigation, and Devon<\/a> and Cornwall<\/a> Police said it is carrying out inquiries after it was reported to them.<\/p>\n But Rob, 65, of Torquay, Devon, said: \u2018I put my trust in the\u00a0Royal\u00a0Mail. I want my\u00a0gold\u00a0back. Someone knows where it is.\u2019<\/p>\n \t\t Despite buying extra insurance for the parcel, Rob was later told it only has a maximum compensation of \u00a3750. <\/p>\n \u2018I bought a\u00a0gold\u00a0bar\u00a0using money from my dad\u2019s inheritance, and with the price of\u00a0gold\u00a0being so high, I decided to sell,\u2019 he added.<\/p>\n \u2018The proceeds were being used to put towards my pension. I have 11 months to go and was looking towards that time. I bought the\u00a0gold\u00a0from the\u00a0Royal\u00a0Mint and contacted them for resale, and they agreed a buy-back estimated value of \u00a39730.\u2019 <\/p>\n Rob said he posted it on October 15 under what was described as\u00a0Royal\u00a0Mail\u2019s gold\u00a0standard Special Delivery Guaranteed next day by 1 pm.<\/p>\n \u2018I paid for additional insurance cover, including consequential loss up to \u00a310k and started tracking my parcel using the reference number,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n But after tracking the parcel from Exeter to Romford, its status didn\u2019t change over the weekend. <\/p>\n He then contacted the Royal Mint, which confirmed it hadn\u2019t received the gold bar.<\/p>\n \t\t After finally reaching\u00a0Royal\u00a0Mail, he got an \u2018escalated incident call back\u2019 to say the item was lost and he would have to put a claim in.<\/p>\n \u2018I decided to go to the Exeter sorting office and spoke to two managers who were horrified and said it can\u2019t have disappeared but had,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n \u2018They could see it being scanned through their system and then into a sealed bag along with other parcels.
