Phil Collins<\/a> has been responsible for selling over 250 million records between Genesis and his solo career. However, despite his success that spanned decades, there is one song that weighs the heaviest on his shoulders.<\/p>\n

By no stretch of the imagination could Collins be considered a one-hit wonder<\/a> under any definition. Yet, a song such as \u2018In The Air Tonight\u2019 is bigger than merely being part of his back catalogue, and is a piece of music that goes beyond language.<\/p>\n

With these rare songs that reach such uncharted levels of popularity, it stops being under the ownership of the artist who crafted it. Instead, it belongs to the people.<\/p>\n

The track was the first single that Collins released as a solo artist in 1981, and he didn\u2019t even expect it to become a hit. While he had experienced huge success as the frontman of Genesis after stepping up to save their career in 1975, this was different. <\/p>\n

His solo career was somewhat accidental, as Genesis took a break following a lengthy world tour, and personal circumstances led him to turn to songwriting to deal with the pain.<\/p>\n

Genesis had done a tour that was far too long. She said to me, \u2018We won\u2019t be together if you do the next tour.\u2019 I said, \u2018I\u2019m a musician. I have to go away and play. Just hold your breath when I\u2019m over there.\u2019 Then Genesis toured Japan. When I got back, she said she was leaving and taking the kids.\u201d<\/p>\n

The birth of the song came naturally in the studio one day, and just flowed out of him without Collins needing to overthink. He shared, One day I was working on a piece in D-minor, the saddest [key] of all. I just wrote a sequence, and it sounded nice. I wrote the lyrics spontaneously. I\u2019m not quite sure what the song is about, but there\u2019s a lot of anger, a lot of despair and a lot of frustration.\u201d<\/p>\n

As much as the song was written during his divorce, it\u2019s not really about that, and Collins even confessed, \u201cNobody knows what the song is about, and I kind of like the mystery.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also stressed, \u201cI\u2019m not complaining\u201d about the wild life that \u2018In The Air Tonight\u2019 has lived, noting, \u201cIt paid for this house we\u2019re in right now!\u201d<\/p>\n

While Collins views the song as \u201ca stone around my neck\u201d, he\u2019s also gracious about the riches it has given him, and that most songwriters would lose a limb to have \u2018In The Air Tonight\u2019 in their arsenal. It\u2019s a song that will continue to be remembered for generations to come, and for that, he will always be grateful.<\/p>\n

Undeniably, \u2018In The Air Tonight\u2019 was the perfect way to launch Collins as a solo artist, too. The success of the creation gifted him with a platform to express his songwriting in a way that didn\u2019t quite fit in with the framework of Genesis, and made Face Value an international chart-topper. Although it might be a stone around his neck, the stone is made out of 24-carat gold.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
