Four weeks ago, the corporation commissioned consultancy Public First to produce a report<\/a> titled \u2018The Creative Engine\u2019 including a section \u2018The BBC: A Catalyst for Growth Across The UK\u2019. Unsurprisingly, the conclusion was flattering:<\/p>\n \u201cThe next BBC Charter must also be used to drive growth across the sector. Industry must collaborate on tech investment within a supportive policy environment to nurture UK-owned IP.\u201d<\/p>\n The European Broadcasting Union \u2013 to whom the BBC is one of the largest contributors<\/a> \u2013 released<\/a> its own study in June asking whether public service media \u201ccrowds out\u201d commercial online news. The answer, conveniently, was no. It insists that lavishly-funded public broadcasters actually \u201ccrowd in\u201d commercial players, boosting revenues and reach for everyone. It goes on to say the BBC\u2019s online news operation \u201cstimulates demand for quality journalism\u201d and \u201cpushes commercial publishers to innovate.\u201d.
