{"id":257172,"date":"2025-11-11T17:37:07","date_gmt":"2025-11-11T17:37:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/257172\/"},"modified":"2025-11-11T17:37:07","modified_gmt":"2025-11-11T17:37:07","slug":"government-to-rethink-rejection-of-waspi-compensation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/257172\/","title":{"rendered":"Government to rethink rejection of Waspi compensation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">At the start of last year, a parliamentary ombudsman recommended compensation of between \u00a31,000 and \u00a32,950 for each of those affected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">While the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman (PHSO) could recommend compensation, it could not enforce it and the government rejected it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Ministers said there was no evidence of &#8220;direct financial loss&#8221; resulting from the government&#8217;s decision, and that Labour did not believe that paying a flat rate to all women at a cost of up to \u00a310.5bn would be &#8220;fair or proportionate&#8221; to taxpayers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The Women Against State Pension Inequality (Waspi) campaign had called for payments of at least \u00a310,000 each.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It is pursuing a judicial review of the government&#8217;s decision not to pay compensation. Campaigners raised money for the legal challenge and a court capped the contribution to the government&#8217;s legal fees if they were unsuccessful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The case was scheduled to go to the High Court in December.
