At least 12 people have been killed in a suicide blast in Islamabad carried out by the Pakistan<\/a> Taliban, as the country\u2019s defence minister said a deadly surge in terror attacks had put the country in a \u201cstate of war\u201d.<\/p>\n

The explosion, which was confirmed as a suicide attack by several government ministers, took place outside district court buildings in the capital on Tuesday at about 12.30pm. The area is usually heavily crowded with lawyers and litigants attending trials.<\/p>\n

The interior minister, Mohsin Naqvi, said 12 people had been killed in the attack and 27 were wounded. Naqvi said the bomber had tried to \u201center the court premises but, failing to do so, targeted a police vehicle\u201d.<\/p>\n

The attack was claimed by the Pakistan Taliban<\/a>, known as Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan. \u201cJudges, lawyers and officials who carried out rulings under Pakistan\u2019s un-Islamic laws were targeted,\u201d the TTP said in a statement, threatening more attacks until Islamic sharia law was implemented in the Muslim-majority country.<\/p>\n

Pakistan is facing a deadly and destabilising rise in attacks by TTP militants that has thrown the country into its worst security crisis in more than a decade.<\/p>\n

TTP militants have carried out more than 600 attacks in Pakistan this year alone \u2013 mostly in the region of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which borders Afghanistan<\/a> \u2013 leaving hundreds dead. However, Tuesday\u2019s suicide attack was the most significant to target Islamabad for years.<\/p>\n

Pakistan\u2019s government has accused the Afghan Taliban of giving a safe haven and armed support to TTP fighters, a claim that Kabul denies.<\/p>\n

Last month, the accusations led to deadly clashes erupting along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border<\/a>, which left dozens dead. The two countries remain in fragile ceasefire talks that so far have failed to reach any agreements over the handling of cross-border terrorism.<\/p>\n

Videos of the incident on Tuesday showed a blackened car that had been targeted by the bomber. Witnesses described hearing a loud bang and seeing bodies lying on the floor near the court complex.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was complete chaos, lawyers and people were running inside the complex. I saw two dead bodies lying on the gate and several cars were on fire,\u201d Rustam Malik, a lawyer, told Agence France-Presse.<\/p>\n

Pakistan is also facing a lethal surge in the decades-long separatist<\/a> insurgency in Balochistan, the region bordering Iran and Afghanistan. Baloch militants, who are fighting for a separate state, have carried out dozens of increasingly sophisticated attacks in recent years, including the high-profile hijacking of a passenger train earlier this year.<\/p>\n

The defence minister, Khawaja Asif, called Tuesday\u2019s suicide attack a \u201cwake-up call\u201d to the terror threats the country was facing on multiple border fronts that were now playing out in the capital.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are in a state of war. Anyone who thinks that the Pakistan army is fighting this war in the Afghan-Pakistan border region and the remote areas of Balochistan, today\u2019s suicide attack at the Islamabad district courts is a wake-up call,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
