A MEMBER of the Jersey Youth Assembly raised the issue of Health and Wellbeing in the UK Youth Parliament last week, in a segment devoted to the Crown Dependencies.<\/p>\n
17-year-old Zahara Noho told the House of Commons how delays and stigma continue to hinder young people\u2019s access to mental health support.<\/p>\n
Ms Noho said: \u201cSpeaking in the Chamber has strengthened my choice of career path and confirmed the direction I want to take, and I\u2019m very grateful for the experience.\u201d<\/p>\n
Representatives from Jersey, Guernsey, the Isle of Man and the British Overseas Territories were invited to participate in this annual gathering by Commons Speaker, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, after this segment was introduced in 2022.<\/p>\n
The UK Youth Parliament was established in 1999 in a bid to give young people, including those from underrepresented communities, a platform that could influence public policy and national decision-making.<\/p>\n
Over 300 young people aged between 11 and 18 years who are elected as Members of Youth Parliament have the opportunity to represent the views of their peers on a variety of topics including health, employment, housing, sustainability, and crime.<\/p>\n
Students are also set to give speeches to mark 80 years since the end of World War II.<\/p>\n
Sir Lindsay said: \u201cHearing young people give their views on 80 years since the end of the Second World War, as well as their concerns on housing, health, employment, crime and sustainability is a great privilege for me.<\/p>\n
\u201cAfter all, in a healthy democracy we need the next generation to share their opinions on the future.<\/p>\n
\u201cI hope Members of the UK Youth Parliament also enjoy the platform this gives them to learn about the political system, talk to decision makers and meet other like-minded people \u2013 I am certainly looking forward to the sitting.\u201d<\/p>\n
