depicting the childhood of Jesus Christ and starring ominous, uncomfortable and frightening in parts, it’s also moving, deep and not at all the movie that they think it is.

Based on the apocryphal gospels of early Christians, as explained at the start of the film, The Carpenter’s Son depicts events in the early life of Jesus.

As something not officially covered in the Bible, it perhaps allows writer-director Lofty Nathan more freedom to explore the reality of what – historically – this could have looked like.

Here, Jesus is called the Boy (<a data-ico="hyperlink-article" the Boy may be and how his powers are manifesting.

You can see why Nicolas Cage would be attracted to playing the Joseph figure as The Carpenter’s Son doesn’t shy away from the tensions between him and the Boy, who he knows is not his son.

He is a devout figure, like his wife, but harsh – and struggles with the test he must believe he has been given from God as father of Jesus in trailer for biblical horror movie The Carpenter's Son. Magnolia Pictures & Magnet Releasing have debuted the trailer for the upcoming horror flick from writer-director Lotfy Nathan that stars Nicolas Cage, FKA twigs and Noah Jupe. An official synopsis for the movie reads: ???The Carpenter???s Son takes place in remote village in Roman-era Egypt that explodes into spiritual warfare when a carpenter, his wife and their child are targeted by supernatural forces. Joseph (Cage), Mary (FKA twigs) and their teenage son Jesus (Noah Jupe) have lived for years under threat, clinging to their faith and traditions. But a stopover in a small settlement unleashes growing chaos when a mysterious stranger (Isla Johnston) tries to entice young Jesus to abandon his devout father???s rules. With every pull of temptation, the boy is lured into a forbidden world, as a terrified Joseph realizes that a demonic power is at work. Jesus is soon followed by violent, unnatural events and he begins to experience nightmarish visions of the future. Finally, he learns the fearsome truth about his new playmate, as well as the child???s real name: Satan.??? The movie's description notes that writer-director Nathan drew inspiration ???from his Coptic Christian background??? when he wrote The Carpenter's Son. As a result, the director: ???Delivers a meticulously crafted, genre-bending supernatural thriller packed with unshakeable images of the divine and demonic at war."The Carpenter's Son is the latest thriller for Cage, who also made waves in recent years in films like The Surfer and Longlegs, both released in 2024. The Carpenter's Son opens in movie theaters on November 14, 2025. *BACKGRID DOES NOT CLAIM ANY COPYRIGHT OR LICENSE IN THE ATTACHED MATERIAL. It is provocative in all the best ways rather than merely for cheap shots.

The horror elements are all linked to the temptation the Boy faces from Satan, here depicted as an androgynous girl (Isla Johnston, credited as ‘the Stranger’).

You know exactly who she is before she says it, while Jupe’s Boy is initially more of a restless teenager, plagued by visions he doesn’t understand of his crucifixion and resurrection.
