ONE of golf\u2019s most iconic figures has finally been able to unveil an opening date for his new course in Scotland \u2013 after two decades in the making.<\/p>\n

Jack Nicklaus, the sport\u2018s leading major winner, has been keen to add a Scottish location to his design portfolio since 2007.<\/p>\n

The American legend decided on using the Ury Estate in Aberdeenshire<\/a>, just outside of Stonehaven, for his multi-million pound development \u2013 with estimates back then of a total cost of \u00a380million.<\/p>\n

But the banking crisis in 2008 and several other factors led to several delays and only in recent years has the project gathered pace again.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s despite Aberdeenshire Council approving resurrected plans as long ago as 2014. <\/p>\n

Nicklaus, 85, has laid out a course across the 1,600-acre countryside estate and there are plans for luxury homes and a retail development to go alongside it.<\/p>\n

The estate also contains Ury Castle, which is likely to feature prominently in the end product of the course itself (much like Castle Stuart in the Highlands<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Now after almost 20 years, Nicklaus has been back to visit the site and revealed it will be worth the wait.<\/p>\n

A \u00a317m loan from digital bank OakNorth has allowed Nicklaus and co to press ahead with the next stage of the process and finally give the green light to an opening date.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s now been confirmed that the course is slated to partially open next year, before a full opening in 2027.<\/p>\n

The cash injection will go directly towards 18 luxury homes and another 71 family residences, as well as maintenance of the golf<\/a> course and retail attachment.<\/p>\n

Nicklaus has put his architectural touch to many of the world\u2019s leading golf courses since retiring, including Harbour Town Golf Links, Muirfield Village and Valhalla.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cIt always takes a while to create a great golf course, but I believe the Ury Estate course will be worth the wait and also worthy of Scotland and its global reputation for exceptional golf.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am enormously pleased with the design of the course and believe it will be enjoyed by golfers for many generations.\u201d<\/p>\n
