Good Morning Britain<\/a> has been hit with hundreds of complaints after an interview that left viewers in tears.<\/p>\n During Friday\u2019s programme last week, with Adil Ray <\/a>and Kate Garraway<\/a> hosting, World War II veteran Alec Penstone<\/a> appeared on the show to discuss his memories of the war.<\/p>\n The 100-year-old was just a teenager when he joined the Navy, having helped to move the dead and injured during the Blitz at the age of 15.<\/p>\n He humbly began: \u201cI can\u2019t see anything that I\u2019ve done, especially that wouldn\u2019t have been done by other people of my generation.”<\/p>\n He said he was \u201cjust one of the lucky ones,\u201d as he was \u201cstill alive,\u201d while Kate called Alec \u201cextraordinary.\u201d<\/p>\n Alec recalled being part of the D-Day landings and paid tribute to his own father, who had served in World War I.<\/p>\n As the interview wrapped up, Kate asked Alec: \u201cWhat does Remembrance Sunday mean for you? What is your message?”<\/p>\n He sombrely replied: “My message is, I can see in my mind\u2019s eye the rows and rows of white stones of all the hundreds of my friends and everybody else that gave their lives for what?<\/p>\n “The country of today. No, I\u2019m sorry, the sacrifice wasn\u2019t worth the result that it is now.”<\/p>\n Adil then probed: \u201cWhat do you mean by that, though?\u201d<\/p>\n Alec continued: “What we fought for, and what we fought for, was our freedom.<\/p>\n “We find that even now it\u2019s downright worse than when I fought for it.”<\/p>\n Kate had to end the interview at that point, saying, \u201cOh, I\u2019m sorry you feel like that.\u201d<\/p>\n She went on: “I want you to know that all the generations that have come since, including me and my children, are so grateful for your bravery and all that for service personnel.<\/p>\n “And it\u2019s our job now, isn\u2019t it, to make it the country that you fought for \u2014 you absolutely fought for.”<\/p>\n Alec said, “It’s so wonderful to know there are people like you who can spread the word around. The younger generation.”<\/p>\n Following the interview and Adil\u2019s question, Ofcom received 452 complaints, with a spokesperson confirming the majority related to \u201cthe presenters\u2019 handling of an interview of WW2 veteran Alec Penstone\u201d.<\/p>\n One viewer took to X after it aired, writing: \u201cNever felt more shame than listening to the 100-year-old veteran on #GMB brought a tear to my eye. This is what should be on the front page of every newspaper!\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cCan we get Alec on every day?\u201d another said.<\/p>\n A third wrote: \u201cAlex. A true hero. Well said, sir. He should be given all the airtime he needs.\u201d<\/p>\n Another added: \u201cBless him! Give that gentleman as much airtime as he wants! Let him keep chatting!\u201d<\/p>\n Someone else said, \u201cI teared up watching this. Alec may as well be my Granddad sitting there, likely saying the same thing. Fought & died for what? We\u2019re bereft of leaders.\u201d<\/p>\n However, one viewer said, \u201cThis is the worst thing I have ever seen.\u201d<\/p>\n Another asked: \u201cWhy was Adil trying to start an argument there?\u201d<\/p>\n Someone else added: \u201cThis is utterly depressing, and he’s absolutely right.
