Dr <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/amir-khan\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Amir Khan <\/a>who regularly appears on <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/itv\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ITV<\/a> shows such as This Morning and Lorraine was appearing on the No Appointment Necessary podcast and was asked what people can do to make themselves healthier.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">And Dr Khan who works as a GP in the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/nhs\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NHS<\/a> said that people need to eat more legumes &#8211; because they are so packed with healthy nutreitns. He told host Cherry Healey: \u201cI want to give you my number one food tip when it comes to living longer. The one food group I would say that really adds years to life and health as well are legumes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">Cherry asked: \u201c<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/health\/doctors-simple-morning-habit-makes-36221478\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Is that a fancy word for a bean<\/a>?\u201d Dr Khan agreed and said: \u201cBeans actually are one of the healthiest food groups you can have. So it\u2019s not just beans, it\u2019s lentils, chickpeas, pulses. They contain protein, plant protein, fibre, which again feeds your gut health, but the nutrient <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/health\/itv-doctor-amir-khan-says-36202520\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">density within a legume is just huge,<\/a> and studies show when they compare people who eat the most legumes to those who eat the least, there\u2019s between a 10 and 15% chance of those eating the least dying from all causes. It\u2019s called all cause mortality earlier than those who eat the most.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">The <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bhf.org.uk\/informationsupport\/heart-matters-magazine\/nutrition\/pulses#:~:text=So%2C%20why%20should%20I%20add,get%20enough%20protein%20from%20pulses?\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">British Heart Foundation<\/a> says: \u201cPulses are one of the highest fibre foods \u2013 just one portion of pulses provides about a third of the fibre you need for the entire day. That means they can help lower your risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and bowel cancer. Their mix of protein and fibre means they are digested slowly, making you feel fuller for longer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">Health App Zoe adds: \u201c<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/health\/itv-dr-amir-khan-issues-36124629\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Legumes refers to a whole family of plants<\/a>, but people typically mean the edible pods or seeds, which include pulses, beans, and peas. Legumes are packed with fiber and protein, as well as healthy fats and carbohydrates and a host of minerals and other nutrients.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">\u201cThey\u2019re good for your gut \u2014 and research suggests that legumes may also improve your cholesterol levels, reduce the risk of long-term health conditions, and help with weight management.\u201d On the same podcast Dr Khan also issued a chilling warning to anyone who is fond of burning candles in their home. He said: \u201cSo burning one candle is not going to kill you, but over time, if you\u2019re burning lots of candles, many days of the week, they give off something called volatile oxidative compounds, which are tiny particles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"mirror\">\u201cYou can breathe in and they can cause inflammation in your body. And long term inflammation causes long term stress and all of that. It\u2019s all a cumulative build up effect. So a nice smelly candle at <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/christmas\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Christmas<\/a>, absolutely lovely. It\u2019s not really going to do anything, but just covering your house like a Catholic Church is not going to be a good idea.
