{"id":259428,"date":"2025-11-12T23:46:11","date_gmt":"2025-11-12T23:46:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/259428\/"},"modified":"2025-11-12T23:46:11","modified_gmt":"2025-11-12T23:46:11","slug":"rocket-lab-delays-debut-of-powerful-partially-reusable-neutron-rocket-to-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/259428\/","title":{"rendered":"Rocket Lab delays debut of powerful, partially reusable Neutron rocket to 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"61254209-43f9-4d95-9c5c-ac7e2a13c01b\">Rocket Lab has pushed the first launch of its medium-lift Neutron rocket to 2026, founder and CEO Peter Beck said during the company\u2019s 2025 Q3 earnings call Monday (Nov. 10).<\/p>\n<p>The vehicle is now expected to arrive at Launch Complex 3 at Virginia\u2019s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22828-nasa-virginia-spaceport-private-spaceflight.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22828-nasa-virginia-spaceport-private-spaceflight.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport<\/a>, on <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/20659-nasa-wallops-flight-facility-photos.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/20659-nasa-wallops-flight-facility-photos.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wallops Island<\/a>, in the first quarter of next year, with its debut flight to follow after qualification testing is complete.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"61254209-43f9-4d95-9c5c-ac7e2a13c01b-2\">Rocket Lab is in the phase during which &#8220;you find out on the ground what you got right and what you got wrong,\u201d Beck said. He explained that, though all major hardware has been built and is in final testing, additional time is needed to &#8220;retire the risks and stick to the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/rocket-lab.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/rocket-lab.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rocket Lab<\/a> process.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"1e402585-7dd2-42b6-acf7-1471794966de\">The move marks a small delay from the company&#8217;s goal to launch <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/rocket-lab-unveils-neutron-rocket-company-going-public\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/rocket-lab-unveils-neutron-rocket-company-going-public\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Neutron<\/a> in late 2025 but highlights Beck&#8217;s practice of trying to meet expectations with the realities of developing a partially reusable rocket. (Neutron&#8217;s first stage is designed to be recovered and reflown.)<\/p>\n<p>Beck stressed that the Neutron team\u2019s focus is on reaching orbit rather than meeting a date.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t believe in the, &#8216;We&#8217;ll collect good data today, but it blew up just off the pad or halfway up,'&#8221; Beck said in an <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/if-its-possible-it-must-be-done-rocket-lab-ceo-peter-beck-has-his-eyes-on-missions-to-mars-and-venus\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/if-its-possible-it-must-be-done-rocket-lab-ceo-peter-beck-has-his-eyes-on-missions-to-mars-and-venus\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">interview with Space.com<\/a> in September.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s not success for us. Success is reaching orbit,&#8221; he added. &#8220;It&#8217;s not common for a new vehicle architecture to reach orbit in the first flight, but that is certainly our objective.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<p>That remains the ambitious goal for Neutron&#8217;s debut.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You won&#8217;t see us minimizing some qualifier about us just clearing the pad and claiming success,&#8221; Beck said during Monday&#8217;s earnings call.<\/p>\n<p id=\"e87c84a5-8677-431a-96ca-1c73e6c0e8c6\">The 141-foot-tall (43 meters) Neutron is powered by Rocket Lab&#8217;s house-built Archimedes engines. It features a reusable first stage designed to land on an ocean barge downrange before refurbishment and relaunch (though Neutron will perform a soft ocean splashdown rather than an actual landing on its first launch). The rocket is designed to deliver up to 28,700 pounds (13,000 kilograms) to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/low-earth-orbit\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/low-earth-orbit\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">low Earth orbit<\/a>, positioning Neutron to compete with SpaceX\u2019s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18962-spacex-falcon-9.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18962-spacex-falcon-9.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Falcon 9<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In August, Rocket Lab <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/private-spaceflight\/virginia-is-for-space-lovers-rocket-lab-opens-new-seaside-launch-pad-for-reusable-neutron-rocket\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/private-spaceflight\/virginia-is-for-space-lovers-rocket-lab-opens-new-seaside-launch-pad-for-reusable-neutron-rocket\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cut the ribbon<\/a> on its new Wallops launch facility, which is now nearing operational readiness. Once Neutron arrives at the pad, Rocket Lab will conduct series of static-fire and wet-dress rehearsals ahead of the debut launch.<\/p>\n<p>Neutron is part of Rocket Lab&#8217;s transition from small-satellite launcher to full-service launch and spacecraft-platform provider. Also part of that transition is NASA&#8217;s ESCAPADE Mars mission, which was supposed to launch today (Nov. 12) but was <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/ongoing-solar-storm-delays-blue-origin-launch-of-nasa-mars-probes\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/ongoing-solar-storm-delays-blue-origin-launch-of-nasa-mars-probes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">thwarted by solar storms<\/a>: Rocket Lab built both ESCAPADE Red Planet orbiters.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the company continues to book small-sat missions for its workhorse <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/electron-rocket.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/electron-rocket.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Electron<\/a> rocket, with 17 new launch contracts signed in just the last three months, according to Beck.
