Photograph: Julian Witek<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Over Australia, the storm \u2013 caused by powerful bursts of energy from the sun \u2013 reached \u201cG4 geomagnetic storm conditions\u201d on Wednesday, according to the Bureau of Meteorology\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sws.bom.gov.au\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">space weather forecasting centre<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/email-newsletters?CMP=copyembed&amp;CMP=emailbutton\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up: AU Breaking News email<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In the UK, local activity reached a G5 rating in the early hours of Wednesday morning UK time, according to the British Geological Survey (BGS) \u2013 the maximum on the geomagnetic storm scale.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Dr Laura Driessen from the Sydney Institute for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/astronomy\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Astronomy<\/a> said there was \u201ca really strong and magnetically active sunspot on the sun at the moment\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><a data-name=\"placeholder\" href=\"https:\/\/interactive.guim.co.uk\/embed\/from-tool\/looping-video\/index.html?poster-image=https%3A%2F%2Fuploads.guim.co.uk%2F2025%2F11%2F13%2F1.jpg&amp;mp4-video=https%3A%2F%2Fuploads.guim.co.uk%2F2025%2F11%2F13%2FFOR_EMBED.mp4\" class=\"dcr-1eupayo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Timelapse of the aurora in Tasmania<\/a>Timelapse of the aurora in Tasmania<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Since 9 November, the sun has released two strong coronal mass ejections \u2013 bursts of high-energy plasma \u2013 towards Earth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThey happened at two different times on the ninth and the 10th,\u201d Driessen said. \u201cBasically, the one on the 10th was a bit faster, so it caught up with the one on the ninth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The BGS told <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2025\/11\/12\/science\/solar-storm-northern-lights-forecast\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CNN<\/a>: \u201cThe second one caught up with the first one and they amalgamated together by the time they reached Earth.
