Across Great Britain, some 13 million people have now reached State Pension<\/a> age. The contributory benefit serves as the primary source of income for many retirees, providing essential financial support of up to \u00a3921 every four weeks for 4.1 million people receiving the New State Pension<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A total of 8.8 million pensioners are receiving up to \u00a3705.80 each pay period through the Basic State Pension<\/a>. For those nearing the official retirement age, it’s crucial to be aware of certain benefits claimable from the DWP<\/a>, as well as Council Tax discounts, assistance with heating costs and more.<\/p>\n

Likewise, those already drawing State Pension<\/a> payments may not realise there are over a dozen ways they could potentially increase their current income in the coming months.<\/p>\n

Pension Credit is currently worth an average of \u00a34,300 annually and typically takes around 50 working days to process, meaning successful claimants could see their first payments before the end of June.<\/p>\n

To simplify understanding and claiming these benefits, discounts or reductions, the MoneyHelper website<\/a> has put together a comprehensive list along with quick eligibility checks to ensure older individuals are accessing vital support in later life, reports the Daily Record<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Benefits for those over the State Pension age<\/p>\n

Free or discounted TV Licence<\/p>\n

TV licences now come with a fee unless you’re receiving Pension Credit. Those over the State Pension<\/a> age who are registered as severely sight-impaired or blind may be eligible for a half-price TV licence.<\/p>\n

Benefits for war widows and widowers<\/p>\n

If your spouse or civil partner passed away, was injured or fell ill due to their service in Her Majesty’s (HM) Armed Forces<\/a>, or during a time of war prior to 6 April 2005, you could be entitled to a War Widow’s or Widower’s Pension<\/a>.<\/p>\n

If they passed away, were injured or fell ill due to serving in a conflict after 6 April 2005, you might be entitled to compensation through the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Medical costs for war pensioners<\/p>\n
