NCSoft has now officially announced Horizon Steel Frontiers<\/a>, a mobile and PC (via Purple<\/a>) MMO inspired by Guerrilla\u2019s open world franchise. The game leaked earlier in the day.<\/p>\n

The game will take you to the Deadlands, a post-apocalyptic frontier inspired by Arizona and New Mexico. You\u2019ll create your own character and play alongside thousands of others in an online experience that will emphasize combat and customisation.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the first trailer:<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

And here\u2019s a chunk of gameplay footage, which looks outstanding:<\/p>\n

Guerrilla\u2019s studio director Jan-Bart Van Beek said:<\/p>\n

\u201cWe already had groups at Guerrilla playing Horizon Steel Frontiers together at the office, and it\u2019s really amazing. Whenever I get a chance to jump in on an early gameplay test, what really stands out is Steel Frontiers\u2019 distinct tone and atmosphere. It has a unique identity of its own, and has been brought to life by NCSOFT\u2019s developers. But it fits perfectly with the Horizon universe, and that balance with the essence of Horizon and something fresh is what really excites me about this project.\u201d<\/p>\n

But the announcement has not gone down well among the PS5 faithful, who \u2013 in the aftermath of Ratchet & Clank: Ranger Rumble\u2019s<\/a> reveal for mobile earlier this week \u2013 believe Sony is ignoring the console which originally made these brands household names.<\/p>\n

\u201cA new PlayStation game not coming to PlayStation, and the gameplay is actual fire,\u201d one fan wrote on X<\/a> (or Twitter<\/a>). \u201cPlease bring this to PS5.\u201d<\/p>\n

To be honest, we wouldn\u2019t be surprised if it did eventually make its way to Sony\u2019s console, but clearly it\u2019s targeting the enormous mobile market first and foremost with this project.<\/p>\n

For what it\u2019s worth, Guerrilla \u2013 who\u2019s just overseeing this project \u2013 noted on social media that it\u2019s \u201cstill busily working on more ways for you to [hunt machines together in the world of Horizon]\u201d.<\/p>\n

We know it\u2019s been working on its own multiplayer version of the series for quite some time, and we\u2019d expect that to be announced in the not-too distant future.<\/p>\n

Original Story: Sony\u2019s fledgling mobile strategy is slowly coming into focus.<\/p>\n

Earlier this week, it announced Ratchet & Clank: Galaxy Rangers<\/a>, an arena-based multiplayer shooter for mobile.<\/p>\n

And now, ahead of G-STAR in Korea, the long-rumoured MMO from NCSoft Horizon Steel Frontiers<\/a> has been revealed. It\u2019ll be available on PC and mobile, with no mention of the PS5 right now.<\/p>\n

While we won\u2019t repost the trailer here just yet \u2013 you can watch it on The Verge<\/a> \u2013 it shows a hunter taming mechanical beasts, just like in the main Horizon games.<\/p>\n

However, the twist with this MMO adaptation \u2013 which is focusing on mobile first and foremost \u2013 is that you\u2019ll be doing so alongside \u201cthousands\u201d of other players.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s what Guerrilla\u2019s Jan-Bart van Beek said in the leaked press release:<\/p>\n

\u201cHorizon Steel Frontiers is a full-fledged MMORPG that NCSoft has built specifically for mobile. With Steel Frontiers, you can step into this world anywhere, anytime. Players take on the role of machine hunters, chasing opportunity in a region called the Deathlands. This is inspired by Arizona and New Mexico. You\u2019re sharing the frontier with thousands of other players, sometimes working together to take down machines and other times competing with rival tribes or fighting over resources, and that mix of cooperation and competition creates moments that you could never script.\u201d<\/p>\n

Unlike in the main Horizon games, you won\u2019t be playing as Aloy but will instead create your own character, although the various personalisation options available remain consistent with the main game\u2019s tribes.<\/p>\n

This looks like an impressive adaptation, which will surely grow the franchise\u2019s appeal in Asia if it can maintain the series\u2019 core gameplay tenants. It also puts into focus why Sony has been so litigious with copycat Light of Motiram<\/a>.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s no release date right now, but NCSoft says it wants to release the title as soon as possible. Expect pre-registration to open shortly after the game\u2019s official announcement, which we\u2019d expect this week.<\/p>\n
