{"id":260373,"date":"2025-11-13T11:51:15","date_gmt":"2025-11-13T11:51:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/260373\/"},"modified":"2025-11-13T11:51:15","modified_gmt":"2025-11-13T11:51:15","slug":"golf-cleans-up-as-rory-mcilroy-and-luke-donald-earn-coveted-sja-british-sports-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/260373\/","title":{"rendered":"Golf cleans up as Rory McIlroy and Luke Donald earn coveted SJA British Sports Awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Golf was front and centre at the 2025 Sports Journalists\u2019 Association (SJA) British Sports Awards, as Rory McIlroy and Luke Donald claimed two of the ceremony\u2019s biggest honours on a night that shone a bright light on British sporting excellence.<\/p>\n<p>Broadcast live for the second straight year from the Sky Sports News studio, the country\u2019s longest-running celebration of sport recognised heroes across 12 categories \u2013 but it was McIlroy\u2019s dominance and Donald\u2019s leadership that defined the evening.<\/p>\n<p>McIlroy crowned Sportsman of the Year after dream season<\/p>\n<p>Fresh from completing one of the greatest seasons of his career, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.golfmagic.com\/players\/rory-mcilroy\" data-entity-type=\"taxonomy_term\" data-entity-uuid=\"af3de653-62db-4df6-b6c6-18281f91c1cb\" data-entity-substitution=\"canonical\" title=\"Rory McIlroy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">McIlroy<\/a>, 36, was named Sportsman of the Year, a fitting reward for a campaign that saw him finally conquer Augusta and etch his name into golf history.<\/p>\n<p>McIlroy became just the sixth player in the modern era to complete the career grand slam, thanks to a long-awaited victory at The Masters. He also won three times on the PGA Tour and added a second Irish Open title on home soil at The K Club.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The World No.2 then played a talismanic role in Europe\u2019s Ryder Cup win at Bethpage Black, collecting 3.5 points from five sessions as Europe sealed their first away victory since 2012 \u2013 and one of the most emotionally charged triumphs in the competition\u2019s history.<\/p>\n<p> Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT<\/p>\n<p> Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a great honour to be recognised at any time, but to be recognised by the people that cover sport and be named Sportsman of the Year is a really cool honour and accolade,\u201d McIlroy said. \u201cI\u2019m very proud to be the recipient in 2025.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It now remains to be seen whether McIlroy will become the first golfer in 36 years to lift <a href=\"https:\/\/www.golfmagic.com\/tour\/pga-tour\/rory-mcilroy-makes-bbc-sports-personality-year-spoty-announcement\" data-entity-type=\"node\" data-entity-uuid=\"a8051b3c-8e58-469e-87c3-7c3bda531ff3\" data-entity-substitution=\"canonical\" title=\"Rory McIlroy confirms he will attend BBC Sports Personality of the Year this December\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">BBC Sports Personality of the Year<\/a> next month.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/2025-06-06t195954z_360589043_mt1usatoday26390857_rtrmadp_3_pga-rbc-canadian-open-second-round.JPG\"   type=\"image\/jpeg\" alt=\"Rory McIlroy\" loading=\"lazy\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.45\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>Rory McIlroy<\/p>\n<p>McIlroy\u2019s brilliance could yet continue this week at the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai, where he\u2019ll chase a fourth consecutive Race to Dubai title and a seventh overall \u2013 just one shy of Colin Montgomerie\u2019s all-time record.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in the day, the DP World Tour also announced the creation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.golfmagic.com\/tour\/dp-world-tour\/dp-world-tour-makes-huge-rory-mcilroy-announcement-ahead-season-finale\" data-entity-type=\"node\" data-entity-uuid=\"ae7a2b39-cd64-40d2-8f2d-eefbb18bf6de\" data-entity-substitution=\"canonical\" title=\"DP World Tour makes huge Rory McIlroy announcement ahead of season finale\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rory McIlroy Award<\/a>, a new annual honour launching in 2026 to recognise the player who performs best across all four majors. To my players, of course \u2013 they played magnificently. To my vice captains, to all the support staff \u2013 without their support, nothing would be possible. The Ryder Cup is an amazing event, and to win away in New York, in a tough environment, was very, very satisfying. To see the players bring their best and go against all the odds, and come out on top, was truly satisfying.
