{"id":260527,"date":"2025-11-13T13:39:11","date_gmt":"2025-11-13T13:39:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/260527\/"},"modified":"2025-11-13T13:39:11","modified_gmt":"2025-11-13T13:39:11","slug":"ancient-eggshells-shed-new-light-on-crocodiles-that-hunted-prey-from-trees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/260527\/","title":{"rendered":"Ancient eggshells shed new light on crocodiles that hunted prey from trees"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhvp9urw003027p3663igerz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Scientists say they have unearthed Australia\u2019s oldest known crocodile eggshells, a discovery that could shed light on ancient reptiles that may have hunted prey by dropping on them from trees.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhwlvuqq00003b6nbdmvfgoz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The eggshells belonged to mekosuchine crocodiles, a prehistoric creature that dominated Australian waters 55 million years ago \u2014 a long time before the arrival of saltwater and freshwater crocs on the continent around 3.8 million years ago.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhwoaaxx00043b6np9sak15p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Paleontologist Michael Archer said mekosuchine crocodiles could grow to at least 5 meters (around 16 feet) long, and some hunted from trees. Australian researchers have dubbed them \u201cdrop crocs,\u201d a reference to the feared \u201cdrop bear\u201d \u2014 the vicious, carnivorous cousin of the country\u2019s beloved koalas, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/travel\/article\/australia-drop-bears-history-intl-hnk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">or so the legend goes<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhvpafoc00043b6ncu25qtva@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s a bizarre idea. But some of them appear to have been terrestrial hunters in the forests,\u201d said Archer, a professor at the University of New South Wales in Sydney who took part in the study.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhvpafoc00073b6n3i6b7nhh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThey were perhaps hunting like leopards \u2014 dropping out of trees on any unsuspecting thing they fancied for dinner,\u201d \ufeffhe said in a statement.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhvpafoc00083b6nip5c0ohq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A team of international scientists, led by Institut Catal\u00e0 de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont in Barcelona, dug up the fossils from a rancher\u2019s backyard in southeast Queensland and studied them. They reported their findings Tuesday in the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/02724634.2025.2560010?src=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhvpafoc00093b6nwhwh43ew@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The ancient crocodile eggshells are helping scientists to understand the anatomy of these reptiles, as well as their reproduction patterns and adaptability, the study\u2019s lead author, Xavier Panad\u00e8s i Blas, said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhvpafoc000a3b6n7rbz6l2k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThey preserve microstructural and geochemical signals that tell us not only what kinds of animals laid them, but also where they nested and how they bred,\u201d he said in the statement.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhvpafoc000b3b6nxayv9y76@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Mekosuchine crocs are believed to have become extinct in Australia around 3,000 years ago. They may have lost much of their inland habitat due to encroaching dryland, a situation compounded by growing competition with other predators and the dwindling amount of prey, said co-author Michael Stein, a research associate at the University of New South Wales.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" exact location of the discovery is a small town called Murgon, about three and a half hours\u2019 drive from Brisbane, the capital of Queensland.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhvpafoc000d3b6n4zl91ntr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Archer said he and his colleagues had been excavating there since 1983, and he could still recall how it all began.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhvpafoc000e3b6nwzb8h5sd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cUNSW colleague Henk Godhelp and I drove to Murgon, parked the car on the side of the road, grabbed our shovels, knocked on the door and asked if we could dig up their backyard,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhvpafoc000f3b6n4cjso6gk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The residents \u201cgrinned and said \u2018of course\u2019\u201d after hearing their homes were sitting on some prehistoric treasures, Archer recalled.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhvpafoc000g3b6nd33jqf87@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAnd, quite clearly, from the many fascinating animals that we\u2019ve already found in this deposit since 1983, we know that with more digging there will be a lot more surprises to come,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhvz3a4f0007356njwuzxc17@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s inherently difficult to identify an extinct species based on an eggshell, said Dean Lomax, a paleontologist and author of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/cup.columbia.edu\/book\/the-secret-lives-of-dinosaurs\/9780231211307\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The Secret Lives of Dinosaurs<\/a> \u2014 Unearthing the Real Behaviors of Prehistoric Animals.\u201d He wasn\u2019t involved in the new research.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhvz3ipn000c356nqfgimu8s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, given that the eggshell was found in the same geological deposits and locality of the only known mekosuchine fossils from that period of time, Lomax said the authors made a solid argument.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhvz4wxm000f356nxsu4uwno@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI think one of the key things here is that matching the fossil egg shells and the croc that laid them can provide new information,\u201d he said. \u201cIt will help us to understand not only how they reproduced and where they laid their eggs, but the connection may help shed light on the lifestyle of these unusual
