Posting the first trailer for The Devil Wears Prada 2<\/a> on Instagram on her birthday this week, the film\u2019s star Anne Hathaway captioned the video with \u201cit\u2019s everybody\u2019s birthday\u201d, prompting copious comments featuring emojis of flames, hearts and \u2013 of course \u2013 the red shoe now associated with the film\u2019s poster.<\/p>\n

But with the trailer circulating on social media, it\u2019s the shoes that have become the focus of fashion debate \u2013 and not in a good way.<\/p>\n

The trailer starts with the feet of the film\u2019s fearsome fashion editor, Miranda Priestly, wearing red-studded Rockstud stilettos made by Valentino in 2010, a shoe that became popular with fashion editors of the decade.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s this that has caused offence \u2013 the idea that someone so plugged into fashion would be wearing what is considered passe. On the Who What Wear Instagram account, in comments below Hathaway\u2019s post, followers made their feelings known. \u201cGiving rockstuds that much airtime was a \u2026 choice,\u201d wrote one, while another simply said \u201cno to shoes\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

On TikTok, the creator NewsWithLils<\/a> wrote: \u201cI\u2019m no fashion expert but even I know Miranda Priestly wearing Valentino rockstud shoes in 2025 is a diabolical move and not in a good way.\u201d<\/p>\n

The reaction is in line with a wider trend for online debate after the release of trailers or on-set images from films and TV that have a fashion angle.<\/p>\n

In June<\/a>, images from the forthcoming biopic series of Carolyn Bessette Kennedy were released, with the actor Sarah Pidgeon as Kennedy. They were quickly trashed by fans, with one describing the images as \u201cfashion murder\u201d, with everything from the shade of blond of Pidgeon\u2019s hair to the \u201cwrong\u201d handbag becoming a source of outrage.<\/p>\n

Strong reactions around costumes demonstrate the love of fashion in film and TV, which is something those making the shows are no doubt conscious of \u2013 so much so a preview of \u201cwrongness\u201d in the costumes could be deliberate and designed to get the internet talking and create more buzz before release.<\/p>\n

With the Rockstud, there\u2019s also the possibility that the tide could turn and the shoe be viewed as a clever choice \u2013 because something that feels so behind the times is, in fact, ripe for a revival.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I started at Vogue in 2011, I remember Rockstuds being a familiar sight,\u201d says Julia Hobbs, a senior contributing fashion features editor at Vogue. \u201cIn my mind, there\u2019s something deeply nostalgic about them.\u201d<\/p>\n

She suggests there is more to come with the film. \u201cIf I were to play devil\u2019s advocate, I\u2019d say I\u2019m always here for a vintage shoe revival \u2013 if we can call the 2010s vintage, which is a debate for another day,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd if anyone can kickstart a shoe trend, it\u2019s Miranda Priestly.\u201d<\/p>\n
